is this much of a gap normal ?

 

If it's like a 4th gen (and I assume it is), you can pull the carpet or liner from the the back of the trunk (between the taillights from the inside) and there should be 2 nuts that can be turned to adjust the height of the bumper. There is a thin metal bar under the bumper cover that sets the height.
