Which is better for motor build?
Hello all. I was inquiring as to what everyone feels is a better motor to base a build off of. a B20 or the single cam vtec. Any idea what has a stronger and more reliable potential? Not looking for ridiculous power, but something that can be a daily, and get the job done. Thanks for your help.
Both engine types have the potential to make power. The difference is power delivery.
The B20 will net you more low end torque than most single cams (some F series make good torque, but its not down as low as the B20's).
So it comes down to where you need your power the most.

B20's seem to be few and far between build correctly over my side of the water ,only a few seem to be getting built for Dc2's over here ,alot of eg;s have D15 turbo setups over here and can run quite happily but only if mapped correctly ,b20 in my oppinion is a great build but not many are high revving in the same section as a B18c .

they'll both work but the d-series is cheaper and is alrdy in your car.
the only weakness is its con rods. though since you dont want crazy high power levels it shouldnt be a problem

Just put in a Type-R Japan Spec 98, it has loads of power and is fun to drive. I am waiting to tune it to see if it will be faster. I think it is going to be more reliable than the d-serires turbo I had.
I understand the type r is a better build than what I am doing, but it is because it is too expensive. What are the differences when doing the stock b20 versus the b20/vtec?
if type r is to expensive then scrap the b20 build for bang for buck a d-seires is king and can esaily be very powerful and very reliable if the job is done right, if you have enough money b-series have obviously more potential but you can have a built turbo D for the price of just a swap
And btw the a b20/vtec is like an ls vtec its using a b20 block with a vtec b series head it can be a good motor but needs to be tuned properly to be reliable and the price of all the parts plus water pump, head gasket, timing belt etc. plus tune a good tranny it can be very pricy
