I have a 1993 Del Sol Si with 235,000 miles on it.
I purchased in 2000 with 98,000 on the odometer. This car has been my back and forth to work car for 9 years now.

About a month ago it started making noise from transmission. Found out it is the Input shaft bearing going bad.

Here are some options
1. Sell it as is, $1500 or $2000.
2. Replace the transmission myself. Price of used trans plus my time.
3. Rebuild current trans, ~$1,000.
4. Get a new trans, ~$2000
5. Part out car and drop off a recycling center. Maybe get ~$1500.

OH it does has a Greddy Header, Test Pipe, K&N filter in the box, and tuned with a S300 in a P28. 121whp/101tq
Gas mileage, 100% highway 36-38, daily driving 33 with AC all on 87 octane
Looking for some advice from others.

 

I suggest just swap tranny for a used one for around $300.
And ive seen many d16z6 engines get to 300k miles so I would keep the car.

 

toss a used tranny in it. 2k is to much.

 

I have a tranny lined up for a bit less than that but the owner doesn't know details of the condition. I'm a bit concerned about losing an entire day swapping a tranny if it is N/G.

 

^^ then dont do it.... find a jdm tranny, the have low miles and arent that expensive.
plus most have a warranty

Really? Why because the importers are there to verify the mileage and people in Japan couldn't pul a number out their *** to sell a product? Don't believe everything you read.

 

I would swap a used trans in it. They are cheap these days. Find one in a car that somebody is about to do a motor swap in it and drive it before you buy it.

Just replace the bearing or pay someone to replace the bearing. It shouldn't cost you very much to do. If the car is in good condition why not simply repair the problem and keep driving it? You state that there is nothing else wrong with it and that the transmission's only problem is the bearing...seems like a really easy decision.

Why do you have to completely rebuild the transmission? All you need to replace is one bearing. Either way $1000 for a rebuilt transmission to make a car work that gets you 35mpg seems worth it.

Now I am debating to rebuild the used one I'm buying. At least I will know the condition before it goes in the car.

i siad dont do becuase he is not sure if the tranny is good or not.
so are you going to buy a tranny that your unsure of, or buy one that has a warrenty? , the jdm ones normally will have a warranty and a hell of alot less miles on it.

op, now that you say its 1000 to remove, fix, and re install do that, when you get a used one are you going to install your self or pay for it?

 

I am going to rebuild the used one myself and do the swap myself. I have some time coming up this summer to do this work.
I am also going to check on what just a rebuild costs with my local shop.

 

Do you know what the input shaft bearing is, or where it's located? It's a very small part, and it costs only like $40 as mentioned, except you have to drop the tranny and literally disassemble the entire thing to replace it. you have to take all the gears out just to get to the damn thing.

to the OP: I'm gonna go with what everyone says and tell you to get a used tranny. Obviously you're in Ohio, but I just checked my local SF Bay Area Craigslist and found some deals in a couple seconds. This guy wants $150, this guy wants $400, and this guy wants $1200 for the entire car with only 66k on it! Check your local Craigslist and find a deal

 

I have found a deal better than all you have mentioned. It is recommend than when you replace the input shaft bearing you relace them all.

 

^ yeah, it would be kind of a waste to take the entire transmission apart just to replace one tiny bearing.

 

I have updated my plan. I will be taking the current transmisson out myself and taking it to the shop. They are going to rebuild it for my, $250 for the rebuild.

 

Good idea. Have a shop repair it and then reinstall it.
