Searching for paint guns: HVLP
Hey everyone.
I've never posted here in the Paint and Body forum, but I sure do read a lot from here....
Here is my scenario.... I am getting ready to purchase a HVLP gun (looking into the DeVilbiss line) and want something middle of the road. I want to keep it under $300 and it needs to be able to spray primers, sealers, base and clear....
So, with that being said, where does everyone get their guns from? Is there a good reputable place online that won't rape me or do me wrong? Living in the woods of CT leaves me with very little options for local shops....
Thanks.

I've checked out Spraygunworld.com a few times but haven't bought from them. I get my guns and accessories from my local rep. They do carry Devilbiss's (Devilbi?) and that's the second best spray gun mfr imo. Definately the best choice when cost is a concern. Harbor Freight also stocks some Devs and is very reputable with excellent warranty options. If you're not a professional priming regularly then there's no need for a second gun. It's a common misconception that primer can somehow damage a spray gun faster than other materials. The truth is, techs don't take good care of their primer guns. They don't have to because primer doesn't need as much atomization. If we treated the primer gun like a new SATA Century, cleaning it well immediately after every use, it would last just as long as the same gun used equally as often for base/clear. A bigger tip gets the primer on faster but that's not a big deal when only painting your own vehicles; where you can take the time to do a great job. Devilbiss makes some nice gun sets, each with multiple tips and a protective case. Anyway, if you can get the gun you want through H.F. then you should do so. They might be able to order Dev guns they don't stock, I'm not sure.
I'll check out Harbor Freight today....
Like I said I have done a bunch of research and I know that I will be fine with just 1 gun, so I might as well make it a decent gun right? Hense looking at the DeVilbiss brand.
Thanks for the words of wisdom delsolproblems. I appreciate the help.

DO NOT GET A HARBOR FREIGHT GUN. that will be the biggest waste ever. inf you wanna get 2 gun for under 300 the MAC gun by MAC tools is made by sharpe i do believe which is a nice gun that would be good for your base/clear. and for a primer gun i got a starting line set which was a normal spray gun and also got a touch up gun. i have the starting line guns and snap on gun thats what i use
I have been looking on tcpglobal.com too.... they seem to have great prices on guns and paint.
Looked at HF and was not impressed at all.... they only had the DeVilbiss Finish Line gun and I was looking for something a bit nicer than that.
I think I may have decided to go with the DeVilbiss GTi Millenium. It's a little bit more than I wanted to spend, but looks like a nice piece. I am looking at the cupless setup (non-aluminum cup model). It comes with the 1.3/1.4/ and 1.5mm fluid tips, so I don't know how it's going to do with filler/primer/sealer.... It seems like most use a 1.8mm tip for that thick stuff.... I could always pick up another tip for that....
Any thoughts on all that?

i also agree that you need a two gun set. for the price this is really not a half bad setup. i own the same kit myself and have shot 2 cars and a couple spot repairs with it. the paint lays down fine and like most will tell you. knowing your paints, temps, and how to apply it makes all the difference in the world.

if you do decide to get the gun you mentioned, a 1.8 tip is great for primer filler. sealer you can shoot with the smaller tips but filler really likes going out a larger tip. i even shoot sealer out of the 1.8

Do you really need a good gun for primer/sealer? I mean, most of the time you will be blocking or wet sanding it anyways to make it flat....
my opnion is no as most people abuse them and hardly clean them, and you wont be as devistated when you leave a primer that only has a 1hr pot life in the gun for 2 hours and junk the gun
Any gun can spray primer. A buddy of mine got the one he's currently using every day at Walmart for $30. If you wanted to use up more material and spend more time sanding, you could literally roll it on.
