OT: Exhaust size for a 220WHP+ ITR motor - 2.5 or 3 inch?
Well, I'm now starting to work on my exhaust system. I currently have a JDM Mugen (2.5) header, Carsound cat, and Comptech exhaust.
I was originally going to purchase a custom 2.5 ID B-pipe and mate it directly to the header and purchase a 2.5 muffler (SMSP maybe).
I'm now thinking about going 3 inches on the exhaust. I know my car is not turboed - BUT - I'm shooting for 220WHP. MOST turbo kits (especially for the B16) put out around 220-240WHP. A 3" exhaust is a VERY worthly modification for FI.
Ultimately - would a 3 inch ID exhaust out perform a 2.5 ID exhaust? I really don't want to hear about low end bull$hit about less back pressure.
With a 2.0 Ltr motor - what ID exhaust would you guys get? 2.5 or 3?

First off, the exhaust tubing is spec'd by OD. The sizes you see in ads, i.e 60mm or 2-1/2" are the OD.
For what you are looking at putting out in the way of power, a 2-1/2" system without any bottle necks should do just fine.

what about a 2.5 piping w/ a turbo muffler, reason being , that the most universal mufflers, have a 60mm inlet, where as the turbos bave a 80mm, i know thats a lot but wouldn't it have better flow than one w/ a 60mm inlet???? Just curious.......
Using a 3-inch exhaust on N/A is almost like runnin open header, very little restriction, you will lose torque throughout, but you'll gain horsepower on the top end. My buddy is runnin a 3-inch exhaust (dropped a motor in his hatch, exhaust from old turbo set up was sitting in his garage, so we threw it on), and it's LOUD, even with a resonator, it's crazy loud! On the street, there's a definate torque loss, but on the top end, especially the freeway, it's gone

I definately didn't lose torque. But then again, this is a little bigger than a 2.0l engine. 2.4l to be exact. Differences between runs are cam timing and I went from full 2.5 inch from the collector back to running an 18 inch dynomax bullet with a header turndown. Full length after tri y collector is approx 26 inches. The exhaust note is actually pretty quiet. Quiet enough to drive around town and not have any police take note yet. I thought it would be really loud, but the tri y collector also acts to quiet things down. I'd say go 3 inch if you are going full exhaust. You may need to add a 3 inch resonator too quiet things down a bit. I've heard a few NA cars with 3 inch exhausts and they tend to be rather loud. Much louder then my current set up.

Close it is actually a 2.4l out of a Dodge Minivan. I don't drive a Honda, it's a Neon. Hope you guys don't mind me lurking around your board, but I like to hang out at all the boards to learn from everyone. TTYL,

if you own that 12 second minivan
either way stick around.... non honda owners are welcome...
i always thought 3 inch mufflers were fine
but jeff would know more than i...

3 inch can work if properly executed...
speaking from expirience,
im talking big gains all over the map
but the 3 inch collector was only a small reason for the gains....
