swapping 99 tail lights .. was it a mistake.

swapping 99 tail lights .. was it a mistake.
both 4door ( 4door tailight got 2 different piece instead coupe have a whole 1 piece)
94-97 tail light.. red ,amber,white
98-01 all red and white
so on my db8 i have a 99 tail light and on my db7 i have the 94-97 tail light
before i sold my db8 i swap the tail light out.but i only swap the outter piece only.. was that a mistake? should i have swap the whole tail light...
i thought it dont matter because both 94-97 and 98-01 inner piece is all red..
sorry if it confusing. i think i didint do a good job explaining it.. LOL.. please dont flame
