Default Oil pressure question

I have a built ls vtec wit a type r oil pump. Does the type r pump and ls pump put out same pressure? I have less pressure than the stock ls is supposed to have. At idle book says 10psi which is what I have. At 3k supposed to be at 50psi and I only at 28psi. Any one know what the specs are on the type r pump. Motor and pump only have 18k on them and have no knocks or other side effects.

i'm not 100% positive, but i think i read once that all the b series oil pumps are the same part # from honda. don't quote me on that though. are you sure your gauge is reading correctly?

The blades on the vtec oil pumps are smaller than the blades on the non vtec pump because they need to maintain oil pressure at higher rpms. The larger blades would result in cavitation, and bubbles in the oil would be bad. Correct me if my memory has gone a bit crappy...

The water pumps are the same across nonvtec and vtec motors though. Again correct my if Ii'm wrong

So thta would mean less pressure at low rpms? It gets to 60 psi at 6k. The type r oil pump is a different number than the ls. I ran the type r cause th high revs. I need to know what the specs are for the type r pump and see if have a issue wit v tec or whole motor. It wont hit v tec till bout 7k and pops in and out a few times. Thanx for all the help. I really appreciate it!

As far as the gauge i have a manual style one from the local auto parts store. My expensive electric one would not ground thought the v tec adapter off filter.

It is supposed to be at 10 psi at idle and 50 psi at 3k for a ls. I have mine hooked up at the oil filter sandwich.

So the only difference is the washer. Which would make the vtec one put out more pressure. If so then I need to find out where all my pressure is goin. Only 20k on motor and pump. Not the bearings cause I dont hear any knocks or rattles. The reason for the rebuild was because pump failure. Any idea what could be messin up the pump if that is what it is. Thanks for all the help. I need to get this thing runnin good cause its my dd.

It's possible for vtec to give you problems if the head isn't getting sufficient oil pressure.

Did you use a "vtec" conversion kit, or just a generic hose and fitting to supply oil to your vtec head?

If you installed bearings on the loose side, or went with a generic size for all (Like ACL standard, or Honda GREEN), the oil pressure may be on the low side of the spectrum.

all b series OIL pumps are the same so if you are looking at an ITR pump that costs $125 and an LS pump that costs $75, get the cheaper one...

however, nonvtec WATER pumps are different from vtec WATER pumps in that they have different numbers of teeth on the gear.

I used the diffrent clolor bearings to buil the engine. I made sure the clearance was right in the middle of the specs. I have the golden eagle filter sandwich for the adapter. v tec used to work great. Just one day it hit a little late and kept gettin worse. I just need to pull couple of bearings and check them. If they are good next step is change pump. Work 70 hours a week so dont really have time.

I have my electric autometer oil pressure gauge mounted to a 4-way fitting along with the stock oil pressure gauge about 3 inches off the back of the block in the stock location that feeds oil to my head. I have pretty high oil pressure. About 25 at idle, 50 passed 3K and 87psi once in VTEC which is 5200rpm.

My oil line may be a little smaller than normal, but it has been used on numerous ls/vtec builds and haven't found or heard of any problems yet.

Do you have any oil leaks? Have you check the oil pressure at the head where the VTEC solenoid is? There is a spot on the front of the head that has a plug to check oil pressure under VTEC at the head.

Did you use the gasket between the oil pickup and the oil pump?

I would maybe try an electric gauge and see if there is any difference. I grounded mine with a wire to the block.
