Default How many people have that black smoke?

Well guys.. it seems like on these cars, theres a common problem of black smoke puffing out when hittign vtec or high rpm's.
Well, just curious how many are out there have this problem with your car? Does your car still run strong? Does it bother you? And how many of you have had this problem, but got it fixed somehow.

It all depends on the condition that you're motor is in, how you drive the car factors into it as well.

i still have this problem, i rebuild my engine less than 1500 miles on it, and it stills gets my bumper dirty, i was thinking that was problably the muffler, and when i turn the car on in the morning when cold it smokes like for 5 secons and then goes away, what can i do to fix this?

i have a 97 and it has about 95,8xx on it now. I drive regularly and shift at 3k since its my daily driver, and i RARELY go pass that anymore, i rarely mess around anymore. But when i do hit vtec or ho high rpm, my bumper gets black and smoke comes out so yea. I got my valve seals changed.. and it still does it haha.
Thats probally the only thing i dont really like about my car :/

i drive a PY, i get the same thing. i hit vtec, and get a quick puff of smoke, then it stops all the way to redline. i figured it wasnt such a big deal.

its when you hit vtec. its oil burning. i would imagine if you got a tune, it would go away. but its nothing bad.

one thing that bothers me about the smoke problem is.. there could be so many possibilities on what it could be from what i read from other threads, and everyone tells me different problems. But i'll probally get my car tuned and see how it tunes out

meh...high chances are that its just your oil burning. all vtec motors burn oil when vtec cracks. like i said, nothing you need to worry about.

when you "get on it" does your car smell different? like burning oil? haha

WOW...

Ok let me brake this down...

White smoke = coolant (mostly head gasket issues)
Blue smoke = oil burning/burnt
Black smoke = unburnt fuel aka burning rich.

Is the smoke actually black, or blue?

Is the car stock, mod'd?

Stock, it could be the O2, cat or other factors.

If mod'd, make sure the tuner does his job right and it will no longer be running rich.

lol i know but thanks. and what is your 2 cents? im just assuming, but i think your guess is the same as mine. and i think the owner of the car cant tell the color of the smoke from driving...just from what people have told him.

sorry not trying to be rude.

Dave B knows his ****

another thing to consider is the oil you use, Mobil 1 synthetic left black residue on my back bumper, I switched to Royal Purple and it's been a lot better

My 97 Prelude had this "problem". It had 220k on the clock and puffed a little, I never really cared much as I figured it was normal. My ITR does it too.
