AVIC-Z1 troubles....I dont know wat else to do.
I was driving to work and the Z1 began to stop making the normal music sound and started making a scratchy annoying sound, and buzzing through the speakers.
The amp was in protection mode, so i tested all the speakers with a speaker pop test. all the speakers were good.
Then i figured i would by pass the amp just in case the amp went bad. Bypassed it and this time i got no sound. at least with the amp it was just a scratchy sound.
So i tested the speaker wires again just to be sure and they were all good. I tested the Z1 by putting an old door speaker to it and no sound came out of the speaker, just feed back. So I just bypassed everything and just put the factory system back in and everything worked correctly.
Now what my question is could it be the internal amp on the Z1 that has faulted? but if it was the internal amp then the amp should have worked because it by-passed it from the get go.
I have had this unit for 3yrs
thanks.

Guy brought in a car that had the same problem (different headunit) back in the day turned out it was a grounded out rear door speaker. The wire would bounce around when driving or vibrate while at idle causing the same symptoms as yours.
Test every wires going out to the speakers use a test light that will indicate ground or meter and check if grounded. Meter the ohms on the speaker it could be a bad speaker, coils may have melted or touching each other.
When you tested the speaker output from the radio all four didn't put out any sound?
I know some Alpine radios have the option of turning off the internal amp in order to provide better signal to the RCA outputs but, how about the pioneer radios do they have that feature also?

No pioneer does not have this option. I am putting my money on it that the z1 on board amp has taken a dump. Its not the first time I have seen it. You can send it in to pioneer and they will fix it for about $130 buxs. I would rather have it repaired then to use it as a paper weight!
