What is the cause of a busted crank pulley?!
This happened two hours ago...I lose my power steering, pull over and see that both my belts are off and the harmonic dampener and out part of the pulley have separated from the inner part of the pulley.....it's sitting about 3/4" away from the timing cover and it's half sitting on the inner shaft.....
What could have cause this? Here is what I know so far:
1) Had my downpipe replaced 2 weeks ago.
2) Immediately after noticed my engine vibrating a lot more....very noticeable vibration.
3) Week later went to the dealership, said check it out...they revved it up and said it seems fine.
4) Crank Pulley is busted.
Okay so do we think it was the crank pulley vibrating the whole time? And now the rubber dampener has finally given way? So what is the cause? Engine mounts? Internal wear?
Please any info you could provide would be greatly appreciated, because this seems to have never happened to anyone I know.

I don't know what could've caused this, but I've never even heard of this happening. Did you change out your crank pulley, or take it off at one time? Maybe you didn't tighten the bolt back on tight enough.
No I've never touched it...and they wouldn't be touching it for a downpipe...or even my oil balancer shaft seal recall either.....it makes no sense
oh I just found people on PreludeOnline that had it happen http://www.preludeonline.com/showthr...threadid=82419
Fifth gens though....looks like I may be okay...

Everyone had a wonderful weekend in contrast to what timmy has gone thru.
so I cannot complain about mine.
after visiting timmy in the hospital I was on my way home at 12:30. I decided to detour to langley city before heading home.
that's when the h22 decided to crawl to a halt.
on my way back from langley on the #1hwy heading west, I'm about to turn off the #7 off ramp to head north.
my lude's battery light comes on, followed by the check engine light, then followed by a rhythmic thump thump thump.
what I'm neglecting to write into this story is the civc hatch with uprated motor (either GSR drop-in or turbo) that hung it's head in shame while I schooled it on 3 seperate incidents of speed and acceleration.
" you better recognize whom your big brother is!"
" his name is h22...."
uggh, but at what price.
as I put on my hazards, and slotted my car into neutral, I was coasting over Port Mann bridge back into Bby/Coq. the rhythmic thump thump filled my cabin as thoughts of a blown engine with metal shrapnel and oil spewed inside my engine bay fill my skull.
initial D 2nd stage act 5 Honda Manical Drive.
I safely pull over to the emergency lane on route #7 ( pointing north).
popped the hood to reveal the accessory belts have slipped off.
I get on the horn and foolishly sign up for bcaa on the spot.
90 minutes later, the bcaa tow truck came, to reveal that my CRANK PULLEY had come lose, tilted over off on a angle.
apparently the key/nut came loose.
needless to say, the alternator and a/c belts came off due to that fact.
the tow truck jams it's winch into the front my dropped lude. I can feel the lower section of my headers feeling the crush as the cold metal piece protrudes into the under-belly of my car. Flashes of a alter boy and his father in a late noon rendezvous fill my mind as the lude unwilling accepts entry from the tow truck.
as it lifted, I squirmed to know that my twin SS tips in the back end will scrap the asphalt, sparks come flying out as the truck carries the lifeless lude into the ward.
it gets dropped off at westwood honda.
the next day I drop off the keys and the mechanics goto work and diagnose the damage.
I get several phone calls from honda warning me that if the crank itself was damaged due to the pulley falling off, there was a slight possibility in which the h22 could be put to rest for good.
oh well. h22 served me well , I thought calmly in my mind, knowing full well that the extended coverage I bought (along with the lude) would cover entire engine and tranny replacements.
do I want another h22? sure, i'll take two! hahhahahaa
few hours follow as I get a call back from honda. luckily there was no other damage other than:
1) crank pulley
2) a/c and alternator belt
3) crank pulley key and pin
4) plastic timing cover.
total cost: $625.
i'll take 2!
next, I figure that my lude is 5+ years old with 88,000 on the clock.. so the timing belt needed to be replaced anyhoo.
perfect timing the lude is in the shop so I figured I shoot myself in the foot now and get it replaced. sourcing 2 other price quotes of approx.. $450 ( plus taxes) to do the timing belt replacement job - I eagerly await what westwood honda will charge me.
luckily, because my hood is already lifted, the charge was just $220 for the work and labor. cool.
so,
I'm car-less until wednesday due to that fact that parts are coming from toronto.
but it's good to know that h22 will live to reep more havoc on the streets.
EK6... I still win!
har har har
victory.... but at what cost.
that EK6 was equipped with a full body kit, 16's, and n1 exhaust. what appeared to be a full SPOON bottom brace protruded from the rear underbelly of the white midget. it had astonishing acceleration, but lost breathe in top end trust and speed. i've never seen any stock hatch perform like that. needless to deduce it was no ordinary civic. but luckily , the lude was no slouch either.
d'oh!

How familiar...dude where are you from? I'm like an hour from Toronto...
Anyways total cost of the Crank Pulley and install is going to be $350 canadian for me...like $225US....It looks like it wasn't the keyin my case...but the dampener breaking...we'll see when it get's out...
I too am waiting for parts...cause nobody carries a frickin crank pulley for an H22a in stock! But they're coming tomorrow...I'll be on the road Thursday
oh well

Sorta related - I used to have a 1993 Prelude VTEC. At 65,000mi, the Crank pulley bolt snapped while crusing at 35mph. The crank flew off and a few valves got bent with the timing belt off and the engine still spinning...
The engine was replaced and the car sold. But I also sold the damaged engine to someone on this board. He fixed the engine it up and dropped it in his car. That engine is still running it today - at 9psi+.

Despite what some people have said...I'm putting in a UR Crank Pulley....at this point, considering a rebuild down the road, and H22 drivers with them on and no problems I'm going to give it a shot.

Okay I think Honda screwed up, and cause my Crank Pulley failure. Can someone confirm what I am saying here?
1) 4 weeks ago I go in to get my front balancer shaft oil seal replaced under recall by honda.
2) When this is done, the crank pulley must come off to get the the balancer shaft belt?
3) When the crank pulley was put back on, the tech did not tighten the bolt to the proper torque spec...
4) I noticed a vibration within days of the recall being fixed...the engine would vibrate a lot when I would push the throttle...I could especially feel it at an even rpm like 2000
5) Took it to the dealership cause I was worried, guy did a quick check and said it was fine.
6) Crank pulley busted...
Does the crank pulley come off for the Balancer shaft? If so I believe that the dealership is responsible for this. Any tips/ideas on how to make sure I can prove this?
edit: I have confirmed it, I'm busting Honda's ***!!
