I just swapped a JDM ITR (B18C-R) into my Civic coupe. I want to run Royal Purple oil from here on out. But im 99% positive that Royal Purple is Synthetic. The person who had the motor before me was just using a standard 5w-30. I know its pretty bad for the motor to just drain the non-synthetic and pour in some synthetic. I DEF do not want to harm this motor. so i want to do this right...can anyone who has done this give some advice?

how many mile's do you have on that motor? As long as it not all old and beat up you should be ok to go with the synthetic oil. Some people don't want to do the switch with high mileage motor's, because they are scared of the motor leaking from seal's and what not.

 

for real? i shouldnt flush it somehow first or idk something....i just didnt think it was good to switch like that.....

can anyone else confirm this?

 

Like I suggested to someone else for cleaning the interior of their engine: put the synthetic in, run it for 3000 miles and then change the oil again using synthetic and start running it for 6 months or however long synthetics hold out for.

There's nothing else you can do besides taking the motor out, rebuilding it and cleaning it, and then putting it back in. That's the only sure way to really clean it. Or maybe seafoam it...

 

would you recommend seafoaming it with the non-synthetic or as soon as i put the synthetic in....your supposed to change your oil as soon as you do that, so im not gonna use 8 quarts of Royal Purple in one sitting... that would hurt....so i would assume right before i switched....i dont think i would even let the synthetic go 3000 miles...i would maybe go 1000...maybe, and then change it again....and let that last out to my normal 2500-3000 mile change....

 

Well... what can you do.... The only thing you can do is try.

 

Don't seafoam it if you are gonna change over it's not going to help remove the old oil it's just going to remove the carbon buildup which will keep the new synthetic oil from leaking out if it does at all. If you know the engine has less than 40k-50k miles on it you are easily good to go, the highest mileage that is recommended to switch at is no more than 100,000.

Also having 5w-30 mixed in with your synthetic isn't going to hurt at all, just change the oil as normal.
