Default HX35 Vs. HX35/40 Vs HX40

I've been looking at all three of these trying to determine which one I would like to use for my setup. Unfortunately I've only been able to find compressor maps for the HX40 so far.

My build is going to be a sleeved and built LS/vtec to keep it short. At first I'm only looking to hit 450-500whp. But not soon after that I want to shoot for 600whp on the same engine. My dilemma is which of these is more efficient in that range.

From what I've heard the HX35 may have trouble getting into the high 500's. Ideally I think the 35/40 would be the best but they seem to be lacking which is why I'm looking at the HX40. Anyone know how the spool time compares between the 35/40 and the HX40 as I know both of these could handle my final goal.

get the hx40, I'm running an h1c hotside with h2c compressor and housing, which is the equivalent of the hx35/hx40, and to be honest with you I think it'll be fine for me since all I want is 400 but as far as that I'll have to go bigger, and it's just what I've seen

From doing a lot of research on dsmtuners and some Saab info as well the breakdowns is as follows

HX35 8 blade - 52lb/min
HX35 56mm 7 Blade - 60lb/min
HX40 58mm 8 Blade - 60 lb/min
HX40 60mm 6/7 Blade - 69 lb/min

From the dsm'ers experience there isnt really a benefit of using the HX40 Compresssor with the HX35 turbine section (wheel and housing) as the turbine wheel becomes a restriction and cannot keep up with the flow of the Compressor.

It also depends greatly on which version you have - the 7 blade HX35 and 8 blade HX40 flow the same mass flow number - so between those two you won't really score.

And the HX35 turbine wheel wont be able to fully use the flow of the 60mm HX40 Pro comp wheel.

The straight HX40 is a better option - especially if you want to run the 69lb/min compressor.

Otherwise a 7 blade HX35 would spool quicker and come very close to the 8 blade HX40 in flow.

Im personally planning using a 60mm Billet HX40 compressor with the HX40 12 blade turbine wheel in the scarce 14cm^2 divided turbine housing - using a custom equal length pulse divided manifold.

Therefore trying to create something similar to a PTE 6062

How high are you planning to rev?
If plenty high, then a Super 40 (HX35/40) with a large enough exhaust housing (14cm^2, 16cm^2) should definitely be able to bring you up to where you want to be.
A couple Saab's with Super 40's and 16cm exhaust housings have had made decent results thus far.. one in Denver with 2.3L motor, w/m injection, JE pistons, corrected numbers of 570whp/453lb.ft. In his case, not enough fuel may be the limiting factor. Another in Finland with same hardware but has just finished heavily upgrading his fuel side, so no numbers yet..

Find or make an HX35/40 and go with that. If you've got lots of room to rev, go with a straight HX40.

I was planning on revving to about 8800, not to sure but I'm wary of going past 9000 since I don't want to put too much wear on the valvetrain.

It looks like I'm leaning towards an HX40, the extra lag wouldn't be too bad, if anything it would give me more out of boost RPMs on the street and allow a little more time for traction on the Track.

I'm sure that would be plenty - our cars don't rev to anywhere near that level but still manage to make a nice chunk of usable power.

htturbo.com is a good resource; check the Dodge section and you'll find several housing options as well as larger wheels etc. Local diesel truck places are also good; I've even heard of some people getting HX35's next to nothing if the box is damaged. You are right about 7 blade flowing more than 8 blade, though. If no luck with the diesel shops and you just want to pick up a used one, check out the diesel forums. Dieselbombers was a good one.

Get a lightly used HE351VE, clean the turbine out, get the elongated t3-like flange put on your manifold, and use an internal WG actuator+mbc to open the VGT after a few PSI. It is similar to an HX35/40 in terms of both wheels, but the exhaust housing is adjustable from ~2cm to ~28cm.

Wow, that's really interesting..did you have a setup like that?

if a hx 40 is ideal around 400- 500 whp...what about a hx 52...how are the spool times?...im lookin for some input first off i have only ever seen hx 35 s n 40 ran on hondas.. i have a built ls with a top mount mainfold ..soon to b ls vtec. around 450whp now ..around 600 whp after the ls/v swap...would the hx 52 even spool up with out vtec?..thanks
