Check the code... abs doesn't work when the light turns on. Might be a speed sensor? The pushing up on your pedal feeling sounds like abs?

A bad sensor can cause a false reading and reduced braking before the light is set. Pull the ABS codes to read them.

This situation is dangerous beofre the light sets due to the braking issues. Once the light is set, you have conventional brakes, as the ABS is disabled. If you cannot fix it soon, consider pulling th ABS fuse to have conventional brakes that will predictably work.
