Default Klunking noise

my car is a 2000 v6 Accord

i got my car lowered and upgraded the sway bars on my car last month with the Eibach ProKit System, but now i seem to have a bit of an issue.

over the past week or so, my car's front right side has been making a clunking noise and i finally took it in to Firestone today (i have the lifetime alignment and tire rotation deal with them), and i also asked them if they could take a look at what is causing the klunking noise while they had my car up on the jacks

after they inspected my car, they found that the right end-link is not fully secured which is causing the klunking noise. i was able to move the sway bar myself. they suggested to have the front two end-links replaced for now and see how my car does, but they're not sure about is if it's the end-link itself, the strut mount plate, or both that need to be replaced. i didn't have them look into it further because i ran out of time since i needed to go to work

any ideas would be appreciated.

The only clunking I've ever had in my Honda was going over bumps?? Lower Balljoint needed replaced could be a coincidence yours went bad after changing sway bar the noise wasnt present immediately after? I think you can check it by finding some way to pry on it watch for up and down movement in joint.

The strut mounts are a bigger job then the end links just change the endlinks first if the noise is still there then think about changing the strut mounts.

Endlinks/sway bar bushings are the #1 reason 98-02 accords clunk.and as mentioned above the are much easier and cheaper to replace.I would start there.

Hi peeps, I'm not trying to hijack the thread but this is my insight of the same problem but on my CD5:

Taken from CD5 tuner

So I've got a manual f22b1 96 CD5 and I did mention this to somebody (unsure if it is in this forum) that I have a slight clunk when I move the car from stand still or esp when you're in 1st gear hitting the accel and letting it go (engine brake) that gives like a jolting effect. If i could remember i mention/suspected that it might be the axles joints.

The sound is coming from front right and it is the same sound as if something is locking into place. As to investigate further, when i serviced my car and changed the coolant, I had a chance to figure out where the sound if definitely from.

As I twist the axle the sounds was from the inside of the gearbox itself and sounds real damn close to the final drive/diff area.

Anybody had this problem or notoriously related? if so what did you discover?

When I used to work in Nissan, a year 2000 ish Honda CRV came for a service, I didn't check the type of engine (maybe f23) or tranny as it wasn't my job but when I drove it, it had the same clunking noise but much more vigorous.

UPDATE: Last week, I suspected the sway bar end link. I jacked my car up and tighten the Front left link. It was firm before but I was able to tighten it more until it cannot turn any further.

RESULTS: I took a 20 minute drive to work, the sound dissapeared! However, after work, unfortunately the sound appeared again.

What the hell is this sound!!!

thanks guys. really appreciate the input.

the klunking noise started happening about a month after i had the suspension upgraded. i'll just go ahead and have the end links replaced for now and see what happens with those. hopefullly that will resolve this issue.

Hey kccord, I *might* have had a similar problem; or maybe not -- there was no jolting. It's a '92 accord (I bought it used), and it always had a clunking problem when accelerating in first gear and then either upshifting or letting it go. It drove me crazy, especially in a stop and go traffic!

At some point I had a Honda mechanic take a look at it, and they said there was nothing wrong, just a "normal" freeplay in the transmission.

At any rate, two months ago I replaced my drive shafts. When I took the passenger side shaft out, I noticed that it had a somewhat significant (?) *axial* end play in the outer joint. That is, there was *no* free play whatsoever if you try turning the shaft; but when I tried *pulling* it in and out of the outer joint, it would move maybe less than 1/16 of an inch but with quite a clunk.

So I put the new shafts in, and the clunk was gone; it hasn't returned (knock on wood) in two months. What was probably happening is that because the driveshaft is not exactly parallel to the ground, when you apply a torque to it, there might be a force pushing the shaft itself out of the inner joint and if there is too much axial endplay in the outer joint, you'd hear a clunk. Then as you ease off the torque, the shaft would pull back in -- thus another clunk. Or the other way around, something stupid like that -- I am not a mechanic.

I still hear a clunk in the differential from time to time, but it's very muffled and nothing even close to clunking that I had before. BTW, switching from 10w30 to Honda MTF made this transmission clunk more audible (but it shifts now a whole lot nicer).

Nysdriver thanks for your input!, I jolted the car on purpose by constantly tapping on the accelerator jus to hear the noise, but normally on other cars when I jolt the car, it wouldn't make that noise. If there are no *radial* free play on the shaft then I guess it wouldn't be any issue of its integrity as *axial* end play doesnt matter as much.

Thank God somebody gives something bout this. I'll tell my mechanics to check when he puts the diff in. I guess trying to narrow it down:

1.Check your sway bar links. No?
2.Check the axel for *axial* free play. No?
3.Check your ball joints. No?
4.Check your splines that goes to diff (I suspected this). No?
5.Check your diff. No?
6. Sorry you're out of luck, change tranny.

Good thinking.
