Cosmetics.

Why else would people spend money and time on a modification that increases unsprung weight and rotational mass?

you can run larger OEM brakes on a 4x100 or 4x114.3 setup very easily.

Such a good question! (Not sarcastic)
I've always been wondering myself....

Well, I guess you can say that you can put wheels other than rota's on 'em... LOL JK. Most of the good wheels require a 5 lug!

Uh the balance is the same theoretically regardless of the amount of metal around the central axis. What changes is what tunernoob said which is unsprung mass. I imagine most people do it to have a better selection of wheels.

^^Fixed it for you.

Least effective modification I have ever done, spend cash other places. In my defence I picked the 5lug for very cheap at a wrecker.

That's the truth! and the reason why I got rid of mines. Sold mine for $1000 plus full disc's and a set of blades. My wheel bearings were bad front and rear. Luckily the guy who bought it from me had the hook up @ the Acura dealership and got BIG discounts.
