Transmission
its really only bad to go from neutral to a gear while under power, or disengaging and reengaging the engine and transmission under load(while driving) like neutral dropping while driving/moving/rolling........... that puts a lot of undue stress on more than just your trans, it also affects all of the drivetrain and can even hurt the engine, crankshaft, torque converter. manuals can usually take more abuse because they are designed and built to be slightly more heavy duty and withstand a lil more punishment.....
uhhh, I do it all the time in my 07 Malibu LT. it dont do ****. their is a huge freeway that goes up and when it goes down i put it into N and it gains speed even in N.
Its only bad if you rev the **** out of the motor and slam it back into D like ricers. But even then it can take a lot of abuse. i mean A LOT LOT LOT enough to do that a few years untill the clutchs start to slip and tranny oil burns up. maybe a year in a half lol.

i put mine in n and coast all the time.
and sometimes just sit at the light in n with no brake and then just stick in d and go, and i have no problems.
i just wouldnt put it back in gear while moving....
