Icon6 HID Projector Retro fit

Stuff needed:

Projectors - I used a set out of a 97 BMW 5 series
Dremmel
Windshield sealant
Sand paper
Tape measure
HID kit 9006
A cold case of beer.

Well for all the people who don’t know what aftermarket HID systems look like without projectors..I will sum it up…they are retarded and are a complete hazard for yourself and oncoming traffic. So after I realized I was one of those people who blinded crap out of everything, I decided to do a little upgrade.

For the people who think this is so called “rice” then don’t bother to read this DIY. This is for the people who actually want to see better at night without the police harassing them.
As I have yet to see one projector retrofit DIY write up for our EF chassis, here we go!

1. You have 2 options here. A: Go get a decent set of headlights from the wrecker. B: hack up your stock ones.

2. After you get them out of the car give them a good bath in the sink and washem down. Then chuck them in the oven for about 4 minutes or so at 170 C (yes I’m from Canada). Once they glue has softened up, use a flat blade screw driver to pry the metal
clips from the outside of the housing being careful not to crack the glass…like I did.

3. Once the lenses are removed from the housing it would be a good time to scrape all the excess glue from the edges of the glass lens and from the recessed area on the housing as we will be using windshield sealant to make them water tight again.

4. I began to measure out the size of hole I would need to mount the projector unit itself in the back of the housing. I had to trim off the stock bulb mounting spots in order to use my handy oil filter to trace a circle as seen.

5. So I got the Dremmel out and put a mask on as it is not good to breathe that crap. Once the hole was cut, I had to do some trimming to get the projector to fit as far as possible forward toward the front (glass) as it is a tight squeeze behind our headlights.

6. After I had the holes cut and the projector sitting in the housing, I mounted the headlights on the car and begun the aiming process. I had measured what the beam height was at before removing the original headlights so I had a general idea where to have the cut offline positioned.

7. This next step is pretty important and the only real mess up that I did. What you should do is make sure your high beams are aimed correctly on the retrofit housing before trying to aim the projectors in the headlight. I feel like a dumb *** as I didn’t do that. (my high beams are not that helpful now). Once the high beams are aimed in the right spot, then you are ready to secure the projector units to the headlight. I a few small globs (pencil eraser sized) of window sealant on the frame of the projector unit as seen in the picture (red dots). This is just to temporarily hold the projector from moving while the fiber glass is applied.

8. Once again I had to remove the headlights for the fiber glassing part. This is needed because there is not a perfect seal between the projector reflector bowl and the back of the housing.

9. If you are wondering why I did the blackout spray job, it was because I didn’t want any (or very little) stray light coming from the sides of the projector itself and not because I wanted some sick “rice” look. You might ask why I didn’t just wrap the projector frame with tin tape or something. My reasoning …to much heat buildup.

10. I used some fiber glass kitty hair to carefully fill in the gap making sure not to mix it to wet as we wouldn’t want any glass in the projector unit itself. After the glass is dried I sanded it down to make it look half decent and gave em’ a small blast with some paint to make them look somewhat factory.

11. When they were all cleaned up and ready to be installed, I used the windshield sealant to fill in where the stock glue/sealant had been between the glass and the housing. You might want to have a couple people around and some big hand clamps to press the glass back into the housing. My pops was there to help press them together.

12. Once the glue has hardened should only take about an hour to set, you can put the headlight back in the headlight bracket. Get that screw driver out and re-align the lights so they are in the correct spot you measured earlier.

This is the final product at night. I am using an eBay HID kit which is 9006 @ 6000k temp. I am very happy with the results minus my high beams but whatever. My night time driving has greatly improved and I have yet to be harassed by the police, nor have I been high beamed by anyone. I hope this is helpful for someone out there. Any questions just pm me and I will try to respond asap!
Cheers

Good work, but those are halogen projectors with a 9006 HID kit. Are the output pics of the glass lenses on? Those scattered lenses will butcher the cut off.

Those are the output pics with the glass lenses. The cut off line is rather solid and did i mention my camera is a POS..I figured the light output would be crap and the cut off line crap as well. The pictures are from my drive way and my car is filthy at the moment lol.

Tomorrow evening I will go for a drive to a dark spot and get a nicer picture with a decent camera!

Well what really happened was that I had an extra headlight and one day while at the wreckers i found these projectors. I just chucked one of the headlights in the oven and once they were separated I just hooked a 9006 halogen bulb up to a battery and tested the light output through the lens. I had a bunch of people say they wouldn't work due to the refraction lines on the lens itself but it turned out not to bad at all.

And yes I have been looking for a write up for our cars for a long time but no one had anything! I did find a guy who made them but he wanted 700 US for them. I did mine for under 200 CAN including the ebay HID kit.

very good work man, from what youve shown that cutoff line is pretty straight for being halogen bulbs in a projector.

see i always thought that projectors with fluted lenses would have poor out put. does anyone who has done a retrofit know if integra projectors are any good with and 8K hid kit? i have a set of integra projectors lying around and was thinking of fitting my EF8 lights with these that way i wouldnt have to mess with wiring up the H4H bulbs.

great job. seems like the moral of the story is that to do it RIGHT, you really need the whole projector lens, not just the HID bulb. and the stock headlight glass isnt that much distortion by the looks of it.

So, the glass didn't really mess up the hid pattern?
