tranny oil for spoon LSD?
I did lot of research over the internet before i make the thread
tranny oil for spoon LSD/(clutch type LSD)
so far I have seen ppl suggesting to use
1. Redline MTL + Friction Modifier
2. GM Synchromesh Friction Modified
3. Kaaz oil
4. ATS oil
5. Endless gear oil (WG75120?)
6. mutol gear FF-Type2 LSD 75w90
7. motul gear FF-LSD competition 75w140
8. AMSOIL SEVERE GEARŽ Synthetic Extreme Pressure (EP) SAE 75W-90
9. cusco LSD oil (80w90)
10. honda MTF + Friction Modifier
and so on...
anyway, ATS, Kaaz, endless, motul gear FF-type 2 are out since either they won't available in Canada or i don't know where i can get them...
also, as i found from kaaz website, it should not use the synthetic oil with clutch type lsd (at least for kaaz) since the synthetic would form a coating on the clutch plate and cause slippage on the plate...
so what oil would you guys suggest and why??

With the wrong oil, you get a weird grip/slip action that sounds like ur CV joints are toast and feels like something's broken.
I'm running Red Line MTL with my KAAZ right now. It made the 2nd -> 3rd grind a lot better than with the GM Syncromesh, but I'm now getting some chatter. So while it's ok to run Synth, it's probably not the best idea. I've also been told that I can use the Red Line MTL and add a very small amount of friction modifier to dial out some of the chatter. I'm probably going with Honda MTL and a little bit of friction modifier next.
Below is a quote from an email I got from KAAZ regarding Red Line and their unit.

First, we do not recommend usage of Synthetic type oil but the usage will not harm the unit either. The only reason we don't recommend synthetic is because it creates a film on clutch friction surfaces and our plates don't lock and slip smoothly. Use of synthetic oil normally create more chattering noise because the lock to slip and back to lock operation becomes more abrupt using synthetic. The oil may quite down the unit initially but once the oil viscocity goes down, the noise will noticeably get worse.
This information is from many of our road racing clients who run NASA and SCCA Touring Cars. "Redline oil chews up Honda synchros." Maybe half of the guys running the Nasa US Touring Car series uses our oil and the other half use other brand oil (Redline, Royal Purple, Motul etc...).
Bottom line is that the choice is really up to the users. Synthetic oil will not harm the unit. We just don't recommend the usage. We have a user in the Bay area who buys our oil every other month for his road racing Civic and he doesn't even have our lsd unit. He just likes the shift feel with our oil so he keeps buying them. So the choice is up to you.
If you like the transmission feel using the Redline, you should keep using it.
We only use our own oil or the Torco Racing Oil from www.torcousa.com in our company race cars and also on the Time Attack Civic currently leading point in the Redline Time Attack Unlimited Front Drive Class (Driven by Tage Evanson).

Nah, the clutches need special oil.

i dont even know wtf that means. if you are at all referring to me speaking of engine oil then you are wrong. im talking about yes using mtf of the synthetic type. no need to get all wrapped up in brands ****...ive done it since i was 15 (21 now) and have never had any problems with chatter and all that bullshit. as far as what kaaz says its a pile. there are mixed reviews going both ways so you cannot take their word to heart.
Yeah, I should read some books or just read what the instructions for the LSD said.

It was pretty clear that the guy was referring to a "clutch type" LSD. Not the clutch. Regular tran oil will not cut it, it needs friction modifier so that the clutch pack would not clunk. It's not just about "brand ****", it's about using the right stuff that works for your particular application.
motul gear FF-LSD competition 75w140...do you think it is too thick for syncoes...?
If they have motul gear FF type II 75w90...i would love to try it...but they only available in japan....
I mainly use the itr for autox and some weekend driving
I think i will take wai's advice and try motul PA90 unless i can get the cusco 80w90 LSD oil...
btw
for 90 weight gear oil, would it be very notchy when the tranny is still cold...??

hows the honda mtf with the friction modifier working out for you? have you had that combo for awhile now? if you dont mind me asking what brand of friction modifier you use as well. ive been trying to do something research on it all i can find is people arguing about stuff. hahaha. thanks bro.
In my race tranny I used the AMSOil Syncromesh tranny oil and it has worked really well. I have had no problems with it and you dont need a friction modifier as far as I know. I have run the Kaaz as well the only reason I changed was because of the expense. Hope this helps.
The Spoon is basically a KAAZ, so just use whatever KAAZ recommends.
With a clutch-type diff, it is rather silly (and possibly damaging) to play the guessing game when it comes to fluid.

I've been using the Cusco 80w90 with my ATS LSD. no problems at all and i did a long break-in with the same oil in a parking lot for over and hour (sure felt like puking after that!).
it is pricey though at about $30/L, but then again, an aftermarket clutch-type LSD isn't cheap to begin with
