I posed this question late last night in GDD, because I forgot all about this section. Copy & pasted below are my posts:



I have two 5 foot sections of aluminum tubing that I need to connect end-to-end in the strongest manner possible.

Dimensions of the tube is 1.75" OD, 1.575 ID.

Which would be stronger?

Connect the tubing with a 12" section of piping, on the outside, bolted/nutted through both "layers" on both sides of the joint?

Or, connect the two pieces with a section of piping inside of the two sections, bolted/nutted through, on both sides of the joint?

<questions were asked, and my answers follow:

It will be loaded on one end, attached at the other, 10 feet away, parallel to the ground.

The two ends will be butted up against each other as close as possible.

Wall thickness of the 12" section is TBD, but probably equal to or greater than the .089" wall thickness of the tubing being joined.



The general consensus was to use larger tubing around the outside of the piping to be joined. What do you experts think?

Also, how much trouble would it be to make this whole assembly screw together with threads? More trouble than it's worth, I suppose...

 

Forgot to add that I can't just weld the two pieces together. I need to assemble & break it down in the field for transport, since 10' of pipe won't fit in my 2 door Accord.

 

What is it going to be loaded with?

Why not weld a bolt into one and a nut into another on?

Definitely a good idea, but I'm also trying to do this for free.

I don't weld, nor do any of my friends, so I'd have to pay to have it done.

 

Just slip the 12" piece over both and put a bolt through each end

I say use a sleeve over the outside also.

bolt and a nut combo, also drill extra holes in the smaller one so it's adjustable, if you still don't feel safe ad another bolt. best way to do it is to weld them together, but you're on a budget/no welder so best way you're getting it
