Default Del Sol Steering Issue

Well I bought the car as a shell, put a single cam into it. Car drives fine and has barley any play but when you give it some gas it swerves horribly as if I had torque steer. Going over small things like pebbles or if theirs a slight dip the car cant stay straight. The car also wheel hops bad if I take off a little fast (I think its a motor mount problem and I'm making polyurethane ones now)

Ive checked the rack and underneath to see if anything was missing or not bolted on but there is nothing obvious. Everyone that has driven my car said that they have no idea what could make it this bad.

Any info is helpful

Thanks.

I just talked to a guy that had kinda this problem. He said he hit a curb, and after that it seems his rack had missing teeth! He would barely tweak it, and it would turn 2 lanes! So hes putting in a new P/S rack, and that should take care of it.

#21 on the above may be missing teeth in otherwords.

Are the lower ball joints trashed?

I think I am going to have to replace the r/p. The balljoints are fine, but the struts are going out.

It is a long shot but check your brake discs and calipers too. If one of them is dragging it could cause you to have a steering issue with the car pulling to the side.

Check your tie rods too. If one of those is bad it will cause the same sort of problems.

Could also be something with one of your axles. If you have a bad axle or wheel bearing it can cause a pull to one side under hard acceleration.

if one caliper was hanging up then the car will pull while "braking" to the opposite side of the frozen caliper.

torque steer is a variety of problems.. you need to check your front end.

axles, balljoints, lower control arm bushings, rack and pinion bushings, incorrecdt tire sizes is where i would start for torque steer.

tie-rods, bearings, and tires (meaning tread life NOT size) is NOT where i would start for torque steer.

what size tires do you have on the car? all FWD cars have torque steer. bigger tires and bad offsets can make this worse.

Well its like torque steer but it goes left and right. I already tightened by caliper and brake discs( That caused a wobble).

I have 205/50/15 with bad tires which I am going to get replaced very soon.
Axles are new I just replaced them about a month ago.
The bushings on the r/p were fine, but ill recheck the ball joints and other bushings.

left and right?...im interested!!!

lets simplify things here....please be specific.

you accel from a light and it pulls left and right...not just one direction?

what happens right after taking your foot of the gas?...does it pull hard the other direction?

what happens on braking?...any noticiable pulling?

do you have aftermarket wheels and or spacers?

Yes it pulls both directions as if I were purposely swerving.

As I take my foot off the gas it stops and I straighten the wheel with control.

Braking, it only moves a little bit.

I have Rota slips on with wheel spacers because I have bigger brakes in the front.

None of this is ever just in one direction, most of it depends on the road.

what size spacers?... i think we are on to somthing... your scrub radius is off due to those spacers.

can the wheels fit without thsoe spacers? if they can i would take them off and drive around and see if that changes anything.

I dont remember what size the spacers are but they are just enough so my rims can clear the brakes, I have type r brakes on my car and I need a large offset to fit rims on without them.

How much was out of the car is it possible your tierods are loose? what about the total toe (alignment) do the tires show any feathering or "odd" wear?

it wont be a toe problem... so you can rule out tie-rods and inners. reasone being is toe doesnt cause a pull... if toe was out for torque steer (lets assume tie-rod) then the wheel would just move and the car wouldnt pull. there is a difference between turning and crooked wheel.

its the spacers and or offset of rims.

WOW, well I was installing a stereo system and my friend looked under my dash to tuck a wire. Well one of my bolts that connect the steering wheel (The knuckle) was missing. I put it in and its perfect now.
