So im changing my brake pads for the first time, the front ones...
I'm not incompetent when it comes to car repair, but i'm having trouble getting the piston back in. Everything is where it needs to go, but the caliper won't fit back on due to the piston being out about 2cm.

If you have a C clamp, you can push it back in...

If you didn't know how to compress a brake caliper, I would say you ARE Incompetent. Get youself a repair manual.

 

Um...you need to shut the **** up. I figured it out, first time doing it so relax.
BTW i do have a repair manual, says nothing about compressing the cylinder.

You used the word 'incompetent' do you even know the definition? It means to lack the skills or knowledge to do something. You came here and asked for help, why? Because you lacked the skill or knowledge to do something, hence, you're incompetent. And no, you didn't figure it out, you were told how to do it. And why are you looking in the manual on how to compress the cylinder, you should be looking at how to compress the 'caliper piston'.

The brake fluid reservoir might be too full.

Open your hood.
Wrap a rag around your brake reservoir.
Unscrew the brake reservoir cap and rest it on its side.

If you have too much brake fluid in the reservoir, it will spill on to the rag as the caliper's cylinder is pushed.

 

That's a good point, many people fail to uderstand hydraulic systems. The pressure must be relieved in order to allow something else to compress. P1V1 = P2V2
