Default Oil sending unit removal.

Hello All I have a 95 Accord and I think the oil sending unit is leaking. I have a new one but am not sure how to remove the old one. I know that it is right above the oil filter. There looks like there is a black cover over the unit and I am not sure how to remove it. Any help would be great. I have fixed alot of the leaks and this is the last one.

Thansk

The black cover is a rubber boot which is probably rock hard from the heat. It will break off when a little pressure is applied from some pliers, just be careful not to twist or crimp the wire going into the boot. You will also need a a large socket to remove old unit. Auto zone has a special socket just for the oil sending unit for around $5. I chased a oil leak for months replacing oil pan and valve cover gaskets, but this oil sender unit is what finally stopped the leak. Not a single drop of oil leaking now. No need to drain the oil, just remove the oil filter for access.

Thanks for all the info. I went out after I sent the post and used a pair of pliers and pulled the connetor right out of the boot. As you said it was very brital an broke all apart. I did get it off and get the new one in. Now I have to clean the motor off to see if that is it. After starting the car I found that there is coolent driping from the water pump side of the motor. I think that it might be time to do the timing belt and water pump. I am not sure that is has ever been change. And I think the car has over 300,000 miles. I have a guy that will do all the belts drive and timing water pump and all the oil seals for $360.00 does that sound about right.

Thanks again for all your help.

The timing belt had to have been changed once at the bare minimum, because it would have already broken between 120,000-160,000 miles as most of them do. Probably a cheap water pump causing the leak; I've seen a lot of GMB brand water pumps leaking out of the weep hole well before 105,000 miles. Honda OE (usually Atsugi, Yamada, Yotec, or Aisin) or NPW brands are best for water pumps.

$360 is a steal for the timing belt service if it includes both parts and labor. Make sure that he is replacing all of the following:

- balance shaft belt
- timing belt
- water pump (pay additional for an NPW or Honda OE)
- AC/alternator belt (I recommend Bando or Mitsuboshi)
- power steering belt (again, Bando or Mitsuboshi)
- camshaft seal
- balance shaft seal
- balance shaft seal retainer (an update which should be done if the car doesn't have one already)
- coolant
- timing belt and balance shaft belt tensioners if needed (spin them and listen for any clicking or ringing noises; if they aren't totally silent, replace them)

You may want to replace the valve cover gasket and spark plug tube upper O-ring seals as well while you're in there if they haven't already been replaced in the past couple of years. If they're pretty old, they'll be as hard as a rock and will leak.

The Valve cover gaset was the first thing that I replaced it was leaking bad.Cool man it sounds like you know your stuff. I got this car for $1,000 bucks so it is hard to spend that kind of money but I like the car and have done alot to on my own and would like to see it go for at least a year or so. I will let the guy know that I would like to have an Honda OE pump and the updated retainer. All the other stuff was included.

Thanks,
