Default Auto Trans Help

94 LS auto. Not sure if too many people on this site have automatics but here goes... Basically transmission surges rpm's between shifts, sometimes hitting 5500 rpms before shifting. When I do manage to somehow get it into 4th gear, it doesn't always stay engaged. Oddly enough, when I go full throttle, it shifts and stays in gear under acceleration. D4 light does not come on at all. From looking at a Helms it says that this could mean my gear position switch is bad (Helms 23-136). Anyone have any input?

I think my D4 light is burned out.
You should try just replacing the fluid first, when was the last time you changed it?
If that doesn't do anything then go from there.
How much is a gear position switch?
I would knock out the cheap/easy stuff before moving on to the expensive things in order to try to fix the problem.

Changed the fluid last week, didn't seem burnt at all. No changes after that fluid change. Gear position switch is about $45 from Delray Acura, but I don't want to spend $45 is it's not going to fix it. I guess the next step would be to clean the filter, but I'm a little scared to take off the bell housing.
