1991 Honda 1.5L Timing Belt Question
Are there any Honda Tech's(Work on Honda's for a living) who know how to eliminate the whine when you change T-belt. Please don't say follow helm's manual, already have 20 times and still whines after tensioning. Only way to get rid of whine is to back tensioner pulley off with a screwdriver. Has anyone followed helm's procedure without whine. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Doesn't seem normal to follow directions and have whine noise.
Thanks, Mar
Thanks, Mar
i had this problem the other night when i was re setting my timing, what i did was use a ratchet to pry on the pully to make the belt tight, then tightened the bolt down. then SLOWLY loosened the bolt, like a 1/4 turn at a time, till the belt felt good. it's tedious work but results are good.
Thanks for replying gearhead16. I used procedure step by step in helms manual- turn crank to put tension on belt(3 teeth), then tighten tensioner bolt. Sorry have no pictures.
Thanks for replying DCRB. It seems like that is the only way to do it, by loosening the tensioner bolt with a screwdriver or your way. Funny thing is not all the timing belts I have done make whine using procedure described by helms manual. Whine comes from belt being to tight on tensioner pulley. Sprayed water on pulley when it was running that's when noise stopped. Very tight in that area, but loose on front of engine-cam sprocket to crank sprocket. I'm thinking manual loosing is the only way to go. Feel uncomfortable with that way. Belt flops on front side until heat expands everything. Doesn't seem right to me. Done alot of them, still can't figure why just following procedure makes noise.
