Default ran my b16a2 last night

so a few days ago i posted if a stock b16a2 with boltons could be in the 15's and many people agreed it should hit mid to low 15's.

it was my first time out and i made three passes and my buddy made three also.

i screwed my launch all three times and ran 17.7 but even with a bad launch i dont think it should of ran the 17's.

my buddy ran the car three times and he also ran 17's. 17.0 was the fastest pass.

now im thinking that the CEL light i been getting is really the problem. maybe the vtec isnt hitting as hard.

i pulled the code and its a code 21 which is the vtec solenoid.

i switched out he solenoid for a gsr one and it still comes on.

the CEL light only comes on when vtec hits. not when i start the car. the light stays on until i turn the car off and turn it back on.

i tried switching out the stock p72 ecu for my buddies p28 chipped on hondata s100 and felt like i lost power after 6k but non the less the CEL light still comes on when vtec hits.

I dont know what else to do to fix this problem. please help

and yes i know its an embarressing time for a b16a2. but maybe if i fix this CEL problem it will run a bit better?

I dont think you should be running your car if you have a problem. It sounds like its a wiring problem. Maybe a weak cirtuit. Try using your voltmeter.

maybe using the wrong v tec pressure switch. changne the entire v tec solyn and v tec pressure switch. and 17's are bad, My D16z6 in my 4 door civic ran 17.7 quarter at 88.7 MPH without V-Tec and with it i think it was 16.5 or something.

where is the vtec pressure switch?

The pressure switch is the sensor on the VTEC solenoid itself. Has VTEC ever worked? Do you have sufficient oil pressure? What harness are you using?

VTEC feels like its kicking in and thats when i get the CEL light but im not sure why the CEL light is comming on.

i dont know where to get the oil pressure and i think its just the stock harness for the b16a2 obd1

the oil itself is fine tho.

I mean, if your getting that CEL, than VTEC is not engaging. Your going to have to trace the wires from the solenoid and pressure sensor and make sure they are hooked up. Is the screen clean on the VTEC solenoid?

Don't know whether this info will help or not but the stock ecu for a b16a2 is P2T. The P72 ecu is for a b18c1.

is the P2T OBD2???????? I would try switching out the Vtec Solenoid and even try just wiring directly to the computer. If the light keeps coming on, chances are your not hitting VTEC.

oh no buddy, the p72 is a completely different ecu, vtec will work but it will make your car bog down,i had a p72 when i first did my b16 swap and my car ran like poo poo then i found the p30 ecu(obd1)and the car ran perfect after that.

Lets remember that not all OBD2 ECUs are the same. OBD2A and OBD2B have differences also. You need to get the right ecu or just convert to OBD1 (Which is easier to tune anyways) using a jumper harnness. Like I stated before, sounds like its wiring. Use your voltmeter. That will tell your if your getting signal at the preasure switch and the solenoid. Then you go from there. If your not getting either you check at the source (ECU).

Damn, alot of people here don't know reading comprehension. Did you check the wires at the ecu itself to see if its making a good connection? After changing everything did you reset the ecu?

I dont know if you are having problems understanding the fact that if you cant use a OBD1 ECU on a OBD2 motor without a jumper harnness.

if the cel is coming on when vtec kicks in, its most likely due to the ecu, if your running a p72 (gsr), the ecu is probably trying to open the butterfly valves on the intake mani of a gsr. since your running a b16 there are no butterflys to open therefore throwing a code.

get a chipped p28 or chipped p30 and call it a day

Good advice but he hasnt stated if he is running a jumper for the OBD1 ecu. He has a OBD2 motor and he is running a OBD1 ecu. We need to know if he is running a jumper harnness.

My guess is he is running a B162 witha B16a harnness because the obd1 ecu wont plug into a stock B16A2 harnness.

i don't know about he jumper harness thing. but i got it re wired when i got the car and the person who did it knows what hes diong so i suppose the wiring is done correctly.

i tried a stock p28 and still got the CEL.

maybe i should of reset the ecu after putting on the p28. how is this done?

really we need to know if you have a jumper harness. your harness from the motor clips into the jumper then the jumper goes into the ecu if you dont know what it is.

Looks like someone messed up the wiring. USE YOUR VOLTMETER TO MEASURE THE CURRENT BETWEEN ALL OF THE VTEC WIRING. I dont know what else to tell you. Thats the way to diagnose it. Goodluck.

first of all you CAN run a obd2 motor with obd2 engine harness, injectors and distributor with a obd1 ecu. As long as your car is obd1 (which judging by your previous post i see you have a eg, correct?) use the correct computer for your car which is a obd1 p30 like someone mentioned earlier.

see thats confusing. do you have the rare del slo model that came with the b16a2? otherwise you shouldnt be using any kind of stock b16a2 harness in your car. since you say its setup for obd1 i'm going to assume you have an obd1 92-95 vehicle. the wiring may be an issue, but i think the main concern is the use of the gsr ecu. it's going to be looking for the iab secondary butterflies, and trying to activate them.
