Default irregular idle

hey guys

i have a 98 Civic Lx sedan with a D16y7 1.6L engine. it was stored in a garage over the winter from July of last year, till now. i made the mistake of not starting it regularly and the alternator seized, that problem is fixed now. the main problem i'm having now is that the idle is irregular. after the car warms up, the idle will go high and low(not sure of the RPMs cuz i dont have a tach) the engine light doesn't come on at all. Its almost like the engine is trying to come down from the high idle when i start it cold, but it can't. When i remove, what i believe to be the throttle positioning sensor plug on the throttle body, the idle increases and stays at a steady pace. so i'm thinking that the sensor may be bad? I took it for a drive after this started happening thinking that it may fix itself because it was sitting so long, but it didn't help. any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

may be your o2 sensor. A friend had the same problem with his 96 LX. replaced the sensor and problem was fixed

when it comes to idle problems it can mean alot of things.
-does your car have a FITV? (Fast idle thermo valve located under throttle body)
if so u may need to take it of and tighten a screw (that could fix it)
-or listen to engine, are your valves loud (u may need to adjust valve lash)
-and to test your iacv = with your car running unplug it and if your idle does not change, your iacv may be bad.

i have more sugestions but i gotta go haha peace

MORE SOLUTIONS!

naw really man, if you've got info - post it!

I've got the same problem, but I live in Hawaii so it has nothing to do with variating temps due to climate... When the car starts, it idles too high... Like 3500 RPM

any thoughts, don't mean to hijack...

Well unfortunately our manifolds do not have a FITV, and our IACV is a different type due to lack of FITV, unplugging will actually raise idle in normal conidition. OP mentioned that he has changed that already anyway in the original post.

Honestly my y7 is having the same issue, however i have a CEL now. I didnt have one a CEL for quite sometime after this problem occured, however it has been about 6 months and i recently got the evil orange light popping up at me.

It makes sence that it could be the o2 sensor, because that is what my light is on for. I have a known good spare that i will be swapping in soon (this coming sunday) to see if that fixes the problem.

Until then GOOD LUCK with getting your issue resolved

Does the CEL work? If so, try cleaning the IACV and bleeding the cooling system.
