Default 87 supra questions

I just saw an 87 supra turbo for sale for 2 grand but he said the radiator fell apart and because it overheated the head warped and almost all the cylinder's have 0 compression. My question is would it be worth it to get the car and fix the head. Its a completly stock 1 owner car and it has leather interior thats showing wear. my other question is how hard is it to make these fast if i get it i would be looking at hopefully a very low 12 second quarter mile. It has 167000 miles on it i think. He said everything worked before the head warped ac heat and everything.

I used to have an 87 supra with some things done to it. Decently fast but thats alot of miles and anyways they are known for headgasket failures in the 7m motor. Get him down to the 1200-1500$ range and nothing more, its not worth more than that. Then find a head on craigslist or supraforums.com and call it a day while boosting around town

If your main goal is to run low 12's with the least amount of money, you'd be better off buying a cheap shell and doing a twin-turbo 1JZ swap. Keeping that high-mileage motor reliable and trying to run 12's at the same time is going to be very difficult and expensive. If all you care about is quick quarter-mile times for cheap, you'd be best off buying an old v8.

thats actually kinda expensive with a bad motor... but if the shell is clean and you have a few dollars to do and do a swap it could put down some good numbers with a 1jz or a 2jz swap pretty easily, or even the Lexus V8, think its called the 1UZ

When I had mine it went 12.8 with the 7m.
-5 angle valve job
-msd coil setup on top of the plugs
-can't remember right now what trim wheel but we put in a bigger trim wheel in the stock snail for the "sleeper" look i guess you could say
-HKS head gasket with ARP head studs
-bulletproof trans
-slicks in the back and a whole lotta boost haha

Now i sold it to my buddy who is doing the whole 2j thing just gotta do the wiring and some other little things and were gonna see how that compares to the 7m i had in there.

basically if you want to swap then go ahead you have a bulletproof straight 6 up to about 1000 horsepower which is what some people are getting on a stock 2j right now. other than that a 7m can still be fun and make decent times.

2,000 is alot of money for almost any non-running combustion-failure type car IMHO. Not to mention the car itself is over 22yrs old. Im no supra guru but i suspect that the 3rd gens dont have the nostalgia appeal of other vintage cars and cant see it being worth that much. High mileage, beat interior, blown headgasket... Walk away. there are better faster deals out there.

$1000 for the shell.

You can rebuild those motors fairly easily, though depending on how badly the head is warped, you can replace it or mill it. The short blocks are very strong for it's age, new piston rings.

My buddy has an 87 he bought for $3000. It ran fine until we found a spun bearing. Took it apart and had it honed for new rings and new bearings, seals, rod bolts, main bolts, etc. The head was also milled very lightly. If you have the funds, by all means, they're fun cars..

^^^Agreed. The 7M is enough for 12's with a good head gasket and decently sized turbo. Real torque monsters, too, which gives you a lot of flexibility with gearing.

$2k is a bit much for it with a BHG. like someone stated get him to do $1200-$1500. and drop in a 1JZ or 2JZ. 7M's are strong they are old and prone to rod knock and/or BHG.

keep the 7mgte.

ok first of all u need arp studs and a steel head gasket . once you do that(if the motor isnt already blown) get an mk4 fuel pump ,550 injectors, send in your ct-26 to get worked on (to hold higher compression), a boost controller, new pistons. and you will be knocking on the door of high 12s

Dude this is the reason that honda-tech has the reputation that it has lately. There's no need to call someone that just because it doesn't sound like something you would do. Another thing is that it is a reasonable way to get into the 12's without the hassle of all the work of a 2J swap. I know since I have done both of these things in the last year.
