Default 92' accord auto transmission

my father has a 92' accord with an automatic transmission that is running very poor. It basically slips a lot and gets worse an worse. We had the trans flushed thinking it was the fluid but its not, its still slipping. I think its the torque converter slipping. Idk whether or not accords had defective torque converters, and i know there has been many trans problems in hondas. Idk whether or not to just replace the torque converter with a new one or get a used transmission with torque converter ? any suggestions on what it could be? and the car has about 12500 miles on it.

torque converters work because they "slip."

the real problematic transmissions came out around 1998. the 90-93 seem pretty sound in comparison... in my experience.

it's too bad you've already flushed to old fluid. did you happen to smell it while it was being drained? if it smells burnt, or it's very dark (like red wine or pomegranate juice) it could be an indication of slipping clutch rings.

i think the cheapest option to fix the problem is to get a know used transmission. maybe from a good car with a bad motor (blown head gasket, broken t-belt). swap it, torque converter and all.

the other option is to get a rebuilt transmission (idealy from H&A) and put that in.

... there's really very little there that can fail. it's a viscous coupling. if it's got a hole in it and all the fluid drained out... or, no i can't even think of another reason it could fail.

if it's full of fluid (which it should be) and it's still bolted to the flex plate/crankshaft and splined to the rest of the transmission, it's gonna work fine.

the only problem you'll really ever see symptoms of with a torque converter would be if the lock-up clutch goes bad. (and if you're used to driving older domestic cars, you may not notice.) this could hurt your gas mileage on the interstate, but it would still function normally any other time.
