map sensor - poor fuel economy
Hi
My 1999 Accord (2.0i ES Auto), has recently been doing awful mileage. Basically about 200miles to the full tank.
I tried all the standard servicing stuff, spark plugs, air filter, oil filter, fuel additives etc. Also it recently had a timing belt change (done by honda), and i also had a new original o2 sensor fitted.
Yet its still was doing about 200 mile to the full tank. I recently read something about the MAP sensor. Anyway, i found it, and it had a grey clip on front section. I unclipped it and clipped it back in place. Didnt seem like i could do much with it.
Since the last tank fill, its now done 200 miles, on just over half a tank!?
What on earth could have changed since i clipped that MAP sensor back in? Is there something more i can clean in the MAP sensor, will that do any good? Or is it likely ill break something unscrewing it? (as part of the timing belt change, could an engineer at honda fiddled with the MAP sensor?)

It could have been a poor connection, but it would have thrown a CEL if there was anything seriously wrong with it, i would say just leave it as is and see how it goes. also, was ur ECU reset whey you had the O2 sensor done?
Hi
Yes I disconnected the radio fuse , and later also disconnectred the battery to go through resetting the ECU. But that didnt improve the mpg at all.
Had no CEL light showing.
Im pretty sure all that ive recently done is touch that MAP sensor. Actually a few days after touching the sensor I did also change the NGK spark plugs for a new set of NGK spark plugs (exactly the same model, but brought from Honda). But by that time I had used a quarter of a tank of fuel and had done 100 miles, so the mpg was already improved. So i dont think changing the spark plugs changed anything, it could only be by touching the MAP sensor.
I read somewhere about cleaning the contacts with proper solvent, but cannot find that post any longer. Wondering if anyone had any advice on doing that?

yeah you could always clean the contacts with contact cleaner, or some sand paper if u can get at them, and then use di-electric greese to prevent further corrosion, but im still skeptical since u should throw a cel.
