My engine mount...good? or is it worst fabrication thread material?
Well the vibration in my F22 Civic was getting REALLY annoying so I decided to make my own mounts.
I had some Accord mounts filled with soft urethane laying around and got to work today.
So far I got the drivers side mount done. I used a basic Lincoln flux core and made slow passes on maximum heat setting.
Some welds don't look too pretty but that is because I had to take breaks so that the rubber wouldn't melt.
(there is another plate welded under the square reinforcement)

(another plate is welded under there that I also did with multiple slow passes)

it is drying right now

I still need to make a custom rear mount and a custom bracket for the transmission mount.
Any suggestions or am I doing okay?

That's pretty hideous honestly...and the redneck chrome doesn't help. On the upside though, it appears structurally sound so isn't worthy of the worst fabrication thread.

I will take a welding course before I attempt more serious projects.
What is red neck chrome anyway? you mean how I wire brushed it before painting?
thanks for the replies everybody
He means your paint job, it kinda looks like rattlecan can chrome, but I think its just the way the sun is bouncing off of it and its wet still.
you guys need to give him a break, flux core welders are JUNK.....that looks very good for flux....they create soooooo much spatter I believe because the shielding is in the wire itself
Flux cored welding is a perfectly acceptable process. The problem is the machines most people buy are terrible and the wire sucks. Running a proper FCAW machine with some good wire will produce fantastic welds. In fact, nearly all heavy steel fabrication is done with FCAW (or subarc, I know).
Yeah if you're using flux core, you need to at a minimum get a grinder (flapper wheel works great) to clean it up afterwords.
That's what I'd have done.....smooth it out, paint it black.
Hey, the dude offered himself up to the damn worst fabrication forum...what do you mean cut him a break? It's rough according to my standard, but alot better fab than the dumb asses I see 98% of the time. Hey, if it works, and you clean it up better I'd think your good to go.

It'll hold..probably. Can't always judge a weld by it's cover esp a slag process. Inclusions are a bitch. I personally think that cored wires produce a BETTER looking weld than solid wire and they typically are better as you get more penetration and and less chance of cold lap. Metal core, dual shield and innershield own carbon steel.
6010 would work just fine too. If you do it right it'll look better than half the mig welded crap i see on here. If you have enough amps to keep it lit there is a good chance you stuck those pieces of steel together.

I recently made some ugly welds of my own with a flux core. They hold fine and mine are uglier than that. For those who haven't flux core welded, it's a huge pain to grind down all the slag. I never do it on the final pass, for something in or under the car that no one will ever see. The welder is the only one who knows if his weld was good or not looking at the heat penetration as he/she welded it.
I generally make multiple passes with the welder, grinding down the slag and clumps between passes. Oh, and I have the $88 Harbor Freight welder, works fine though labor intensive.

nthing that its not bad for a beginner with flux. It should hold.
I bought a 200A AC/DC Chinese Tig and although its not great as tigs go, for $700 almost 2 years ago I can't complain. The LCD amperage screen went out on it however which means I have to foot pedal it and sorta guess then read the puddle. This isn't easy when you have to move kinda fast like with aluminum but is certainly doable. They're down to like $500 now on eBay. I found my Argon bottle for $110 on craigslist already mostly full.
