Icon2 Help me understand wide body...

Ok so i've been looking at wide body kits, i understand the concept of why i would want to make my car wider or lowering it (center of gravity right?) but should i be thinking wide body in terms of wider tires or wheel spacers or a combination of both? or whats the deal with wide body?

Increased track width usually improves performance. Track width is measured from the center line of a wheel. Put the wider wheels with wider tires further from the hubs increases the grip available to the vehicle in cornering situations.

wider fenders means you can put more rubber on the car, hence better handling

All of the above ++

You would justify a wide body kit with wider wheels as previously stated above. If you left the car with the stock off set / wheel dimensions and put a widebody kit on it would look absurd. The opposite holds true as well; Wide wheels with a big off set would stick out of the fenders and look pretty terrible.

Also, the widebody kit allows for the air to flow over the fender as opposed to having air directly hit the surface of the tires which would cause more drag.

Some widebody kits, like the ASM widebody kit, adds 2 times the cars weight in downforce. One of the reasons why it broke the record for fastest all motor in the Tsukuba Circut Time Attack. Most other wide body kits serve the purpose as listed above.

i suspect that this guy is not looking for increased downforce - i think he is looking for a low wide car.

Wide-body is for hard-parking or racers who need to fit more tire. You can fit 275-285 R-comps under the stock fenders, so wider fenders are for 315-335 tires.

Why do you want bigger fenders?
