I was told you can use synthetic motor oil in a manual transmission. I cant remember which kind though. Has anyone use synthetic motor oil in the manual tranny before? If so what kind? thanks

 

I changed mine out for none synthetic 10w40 and i wouldn't recommend it. I find my car shifts really bad now. Id also like to see what synthetic works well to?

i have honda ATF but was gonna top it off with motoroil instead of buying another quart.

 

ATF doesn't belong in a manual trans... even if it's from honda!

in a pinch i'm sure it wouldn't hurt to mix MTF and 10w30, but you'll know exactly what you have if it's 100% of one or the other.

1grex: is there any diff. between honda MTF and acura MTF...? i would assume they're the same.

 

The only difference is the sticker on the bottle I don't know why I said Acura, brain fart

Honda states that it is ok to use 10w-30 motor oil as a temporary replacement and it works fine. I ran mine (200,xxx mile tranny) with 10w-30 conventional motor oil for some time without any problems, I then switched to Royal Purple synthetic, it was horrible (syncro problems and leaks from the axle seals). I'm finally back to what I originally had, which is Honda MTF and it is by far the best from my experience.

Sounds like you're already sold, but I'll just echo the suggestion: 'Honda MTF!'

My car had std Xw-30W motor oil installed when I bought it.
This worked 'OK,' but I was surprised and very pleased when the MTF went in. The synchro clutches match speed much more smoothly (not that I abuse them), and the shift effort is greatly reduced.

I understand some of the aftermarket MTF is just as good.
The trick is finding a good brand at a price cheap enough to justify the hassle.
