Hey guys,

I recently tried inspecting the timing on my D16Y7. I have an advance timing light so when I switch to 12 degree advance and look at the timing, I see the white mark on the crank pulley (it's lined up with the notch on the timing belt lower cover). The problem is when I switch the advance on my timing light to 0 degree (as is the case with timing lights that have no advance ****) I don't see any marks on the crank pulley. What's going on here? Does my car not have those marks or what?

sounds like the pulley is dirty and you just can't see the colored notch. the notch you are looking for is the center notch of a group of 3 notches.


also, do you have the service connector plug jumped?

 

At the time I did the inspection, I didn't have it jumped. But, I assumed since the white mark was lining up with the notch that the red one would too once I switched to 0 degree advance on the timing light.

 

I'm pretty sure it needs to be jumped even during inspection to give an accurate view of the timing.

 

I tried cranking the car a few times to observe if I can see the 3 marks on the crank pulley but I wasn't able to; and the crank pulley doesn't look all that dirty.

I'll try cleaning it and jumping the service connector tomorrow and see if I get different results.

 

Ok, I tried inspecting the ignition timing today with the service connector jumped and I finally saw the red mark (12 BTDC) when I set my timing light at 0 degree advance. The thing is it's very hard to see; much, much harder than the white TDC mark.

I then tried without jumping the service connector and it still was right on the notch but again, it was hard to see. I might put some chalk or something to make it easier to see.

First I turned the crank manually from the crank bolt to make sure that the three marks existed. Once I made sure they did exist, I checked it with my timing gun. It was hard to see the red mark but I'm satisfied.
