is it possible to put a d16z6 head vtec on a d16y7 block that the head isnt vtec

Yes, do a search, you'll find more info about it.

 

Since I'm not a big fan of having to search for stuff , I'll tell you what I know. Yes you can put it on, BUT in order to get VTEC you're going to need the P28 ECU from a Z6 motor, which comes in 92-95 EX's and SI's (in case you didnt know). Also, just about everything from a D15 or D16 will bolt on to each other (besides like valves and stuff).

 

ok well i have a d16z6 in my 94 coupe right now. but i have to replace the crankshaft and i found a d16y7 block in good condition so i was wondering if i could just throw the z6 head on and if the transmission would bolt right on as well ..

 

If I've got this straight....you want to put in a y7 block with a z6 head? If so then YES it would work. But you're going to loose power! I'd recommend trying to find a z6 OR y8 block...maybe even an A6. Both the transmission and the head will bolt right up. What you're doing I believe is referred to as the "Mini me" swap. Me myself, I'm running a Z1 with a Z6 transmission. But I'm dropping in the Z6 engine before the East Coast meet on June 7th.

 

^ What??? Lose power, why would he lose power. The compression of both heads are almost the same, plus the added air flow from VTEC. And no, the head doesn't simply "bolt right up"; well not exactly. You'd need 9 head studs for the Y7 and 1 head stud for the Z6 (pretty much any '88-'95 D-series head stud will work). That 1 Z6 head stud goes by the VTEC solenoid.

Deadlock281 - This is exactly why people should search for info, instead of asking questions that have been answered hundreds of times. There is far too much misinformation out there, and little tid bits of info that really isn't considered to be all that common of knowledge (ex. the head stud thing).

This. Especially since it inst quite a bolt on, you will prob need the correct timing belt, water pump ,etc so you want to make sure that what you have will work.

Yeah its called a mini me, putting a nonvtec block with a vtec head. It would cost you about 400 but I think you might as well look for a complete z6 and sell the head...

Why would he gain power on a block not designed for VTEC? It should be about the same but I think it would be lower a bit.

Do you mean a D15Z1? Don't mess with that man. I've got a Z1 in my VX and it sucks *****! VTEC-E IS NOT VTEC. Keep the Z1 transmission though in case you want to go turbo later on down the road. Those long gears would come in handy on a boosted Z6. My opinion anyways...wish mine hadn't crapped out on me.

 

Its still VTEC but its not geared toward performance but rather fuel economy. VTEC-E only opens one of the two intake valves on the lower rpms and it opens both intake valves in the higher rpms. While regular VTEC uses both intake and exhaust valves but the camshaft profile changes when the lobes lock together which results in the valves staying open longer.

 

well then from the sounds of it. i should just spend a lil extra and swap to a b series ..
which would run around 1500 right

Youre better off getting a complete Z6 for about $400 or so and selling your head. Lots of pple looking for Z6 heads for mini-me swaps.

if i were id get a p28' ecu a y8 vtec head with the y8 manifold better flowing' ajustible timing gear to make life easy' and sometimes there a oil jet in block u got to take out but dont think there is one on the y7 ; other then that shave the head .30 thousands and port that pig and youd have a fast single cam done it '

 

if i were you i go with z6 head, y8 intake manifold, p28 ecu
