Well today I did my long awaited transmission flush.
I've been experiencing flares in my car (like keep the accelerator down when you change gears in a manual) and was hoping a change of fluid would fix the problem.
I took my car for a drive, and it felt better, I can't really describe it, except it "felt" like the ATF was thicker, and giving me better performance. I had no flares during my 20 minute test drive until I was 2 minutes from home, and I had a small flare.
I think the fluid helped, but the problem is still there. It happens in all forward gears, so I think the front clutch is slipping, since that's common to all the forward gears, so I think I'll have to fix it at some point.
The used car warranty on my car runs out in 6 months, so I'll have to get this fixed soon, and I was wondering how much it would cost to fix my transmission?
My warranty is good for up to $NZ3000, which is around $US1300.

It will every bit of that money to rebuild that tranny. I spent US$2300 for and uprated tranny built to my specs. When you go to get it done ask for better clutch packs ie. Carbon kevlar or if the hub can be machined out to accept more. and only run honda tranny fluid all the time. Add a external tranny cooler is a a good investment.
first of all, if it is an automatic transmission there is no clutch. there is a torque converter and a flexplate. there could be a couple of things wrong with the tranny. you may want to have them replace the flexplate. or checking on the torque converter itself. chances are the torque converter is ok. you will probably have to just replace the flexplate. those are probably about $100 US from the dealership, but i am sure they will rape you on the labor to change it. you are looking at probably about 5-6 hours of labor to do that job. you may also want to have them change the tranny filter. if the fluid seemed like it helped a little, maybe the filter is plugged or something. have them check that while it out. the only other thing that i can think of is the transmission computer. the 3rd gen preludes have an ecu for the engine and one for the transmission. maybe something is wrong with that. hope some of this helps. good luck.

It's a popular auto transmission, used on Ford Falcons, Escorts, and other rear wheel drive cars. (not just Fords)
I don't think they're being used anymore, because it's an old design, and car manufacturers are moving towards electronic controls.

I have seen the 12 clutch packs the went into my tranny so do some research and then talk. They arn't part of the flex plate/ torque converter they make up my 4th gear and o/d. Please know what you talking about before you start to correct me. thank you

Just an update, I got quoted a "ball park" figure of $NZ1880, around $US830.
That was over the phone, and after I told them I thought it was my front clutch slipping. I didn't ask about the kevlar clutch though.
