Default 1st day of body work for my DA

I just bought this DA last wednesday. Overall it's in pretty good shape but needs some love. Today i started on the body work.

Both quaters had some pretty bad rust under the trim

The guy who owned before me debadged the hatch but didn't do anything with the holes so i figured while i was already mixing up putty i would take care of them too.

The passenger rear window had a rust hole under the window trim.

^hatch after a lot of sanding putty and a little bit of paint(this paint is temp...will be painting whole car over summer)

^after of rear quarter

^^Didn't get time to sand the putty in trim area today, but theres always tomorrow.....gotta love body work.

hold on, u know ur not taking care of the rust right?ur just filling the rust with putty, the rust will come back and bite u in the *** later on, if i was you i wouldnt even spend money on painting when the rust is gonna show after couple of years, i learned the hard way, just do it right the first time. u didnt even sand the paint before applying the putty, u sand it out with like 80 120 grid, so i can stick better, sometimes it will just crack if u dont it right, but anywyz good job for trying.

i actually spent about the first half of my day sanding the rust down...even had a little help from some aircraft stripper. i know the driver side shouldve been sanded better...but i let my buddy do that side and hes impatient lol. but the passenger side was definately sanded until nice bare metal. i will probably do the ds stuff over again tomorrow

You do know that that bondo is going to fall out right? You cant just fill a hole with it and have no kind of backing. The correct method is to weld in a patch or at the least glue a patch on from the backside then fill the front. Just throwing that out there.

Or riveting a piece in there and countersinking the rivets then filling in the dings, if you don't have access to a welder.

Well, time to get all that Bondo out and fix the rust the right way.... Bondo, or any filler for that matter, does not stop rust and neither does sanding it down.

You've not really done anything positive for the body, to be frank. You're actually creating more problems by filling those holes with plastic filler, instead of welding in replacement panels.

Fuser pieces of metal behind the holes then then grind it down and then filler over it. Then por15 the inside so it doesn't rust. Cheap fix...
