Default Car grinds into third at 5 RPM and above.

98 EX D16y8 motor.

My car grinds when I shift into 3rd gear (only 3rd gear) but only at about 5 RPM's and above.

What can I do to stop this now?

I have heard of a fluid called Syncro something?

Thank you for any advice.

i had the exact same problem in my 99 ex, at first it was around 5500 then it would do it randomly around 4k, i just picked up a new tranny since no fluid i tried would fix it.

its a known y8 problem...... and it only gets worse....it will start poping out of gear when letting off of the gas or coasting in said third gear. usually caused by driving a 127hp SOHC motor like its a race car. Trust me im not trying to be a dizck because ive been there and done that. just giving you my .02 from first-hand experince

its really light. its not a loud rev and gear miss type of grind.

its like a slight... "munch"?? type feeling more than sound.

But I am definitely going to take it easy now and try some fluids.

About how much is a D series tranny because I know they are not too cheap on HMO...

So, shifting hard on a stock tranny causes this problem?

shifting hard on any tranny will cause it's wear and tear, you can combat it to an extent by doing what i did when i rebuilt my tranny and use carbon coated synchros from GearSpeed.

OP check craigslist, you can normally get a good EX tranny for what i've seen around 150.

^^^^ QFT

Drive it easy and bide your time until you can find one for ~200. Don't buy a reman or whatever unless you've got money to burn.

Go to a GM dealership or a Chevy Dealership and buy some GM Syncromesh Friction Modified fluid its expensive but it will fix the problem and will shift like butter. I have read sooo much on this tranny fluid it works everytime. But if you wait to long it will be to late to cover it up with really good tranny fluid. so do it now.

You need 2 quarts of it and it runs around $10-18 a quart. way better then 1500 on a new tranny.

GM Syncromesh FRICTION MODIFIED! Part Number-12377916.

Don't get any thing other then FRICTION MODIFIED. This **** is magic Bro!

probably around 1000 re-man. but they are so common, and easy to rebuild your alternative options far outweigh the route of a new or re-man unit.

My tranny is nasty. 3rd gear above 2300 RPM it will grind. 4th will randomly grind and 1st will randomly grind. I ran 10w40 motor oil in it but i just recently put Pennzoil Syncromesh in with a quart of 5w30 motor oil because autozome didn't have 2 quarts of Pennzoil.

And Gm Syncro is $18.50 a quart where i live and im to broke to get it.

You can try all the bandaids or spend money on a USED transmission people have recommended or open the transmission and knock the countershaft bearing back into the case flush and stake it into place!
