Something is going on with the steering on my 93 EG hatch. Just the other day, it's almost as if the steering went out on me. I went to turn right and the car would barely turn, even with the most input into the wheel as possible. It is like this turning both left and right. It's almost as if the steering is detached in a way. Its a very vague feel in the steering wheel. I can tun the wheel left and right quite a bit and the car will keep going straight. Can anyone tell me what would cause this? I was able to lift the car enough to get under it and I could not see anything visually that was wrong with the tie rods or axle setup. I am thinking it is the steering box, but I want to make sure before I go out to a scrap yard and find a replacement.

If it is the steering box, what is the best source to pick up another used one? I do not have time to pull the part myself so I would rather just buy one from someone.

It sounds like the rack is going bad.Honda pumps dont usually go bad but anything can happen.You can source a rack from any eg civic.Manuel racks are the way to go in my opinion.

 

is it power steering? the pump could of went bad ...
if its manual, i'd say somethings about ready to break in side the rack and pinion. You're not going to be able to see anything underneath but i'd jack the front tires up, then spin the wheel left and right to see if you can hear any clunking or grinding.

 

The car does not have power steering.

Anyway to tell if its the rack for sure?

 

If theres no p/s pump,then the only part to be bad is the rack.Something is broken internally.
