ok now i drew some pix of where it would be and they are bad

now go to your car look on the driverside under the hood at the intake manny

now you should see a black circle on the manny and a hose from it into the manny if you look at the manny sideways you will see it now between them you can see a sensor that sensor is the iat intake air temp sensor

Don't the '96-'00 Civics have them mounted to the intake pipe by the throttle body?
Otherwise, for the '5th gens, it's mounted around here (or slightly higher and slightly towards the driver's side more):

Vital123 - That's exactly what it is.

1) Clear the CEL code from the ECU (remove 7.5A BACKUP fuse for a minute or so) to see whether the code returns. You may have just disconnected the IAT and forgot to reconnect it.

2) Try cleaning the sensor and connector before replacing.

it could be but only gives you a general idea it could be the wire shorting out it could be anything because they normally do not go out unless your running with a after market air filter and it gets to dirty.
the sensor itself runs the temp of the air to produce what fuel ratio to provide
then it atomizes it with air to give the correct burn ration in the cumbustion chamber.
normally when the go out you still do not get a check light you lucky if you do but you run richer.well that is what i was told

No problem. Good luck with the fix -- I hope it turns out to be inexpensive.
