Default Leak from Differential?

I was at an event, and slowly leaking tranny fluid through the sessions. I replaced the diff/axle seal on this side, thought that had to be it. I have the flush with the surface. Next session, axle comes out, looks like the fluid may be coming from the diff, any thoughts?

Tranny is a USDM ITR with a Quaife Diff, under 400 miles on it

So the axle serves as the seal? Then why was it leaking in the first place? The axle was in good when it was leaking before I replaced the seal.

With seal removed...why is there such a gap?

The fluid was overfilled to force the leak to come gushing out for ease of seeing

with the axles in grab the inner joints and see if the diff has play? Has this transmission been rebuilt? If so were the proper shims installed?

Are you sure that seal was the right size and fit tight on the axle? Does the axle have a bur where the seal rides, if so it can tear the new seal.

Also use honda seals I've had little luck with aftermarket seals!

if you dont drain the tranny prior to pulling out an axle fluid will pour out of the diff.

also if you overfill the tranny you will develop a leak there.

the seals just get brittle and fail over time, i replaced mine with OEM honda seals in my gsr tranny when i installed a JDM ITR LSD early this year.. no problems yet.

Did you shim the diff?

reading owned you on that question.

Complete BS.
I once filled my trans way over on purpose and not a sigle leak. If it is severly overfilled it will come out the breather on the top, Not cause a leak from a properly sealed case or break a gasket seal.

Unless you tilt the car with a jack

dude the helms procedure tells you to drain the tranny because fluid will flow out of there if otherwise when you remove an axle.

and yes if you overfill your tranny it can leak over time from the diff seals, i've seen it happen on several occasions.

You should never have to overfill your transmision.

If you remove this 17mm bolt, when filling the tranny, any excess will ooze out of it. When it spills out, you know to stop filling.

Also, use Honda seals like somebody else mentioned, AND, put them in properly.

If you consider putting a diff in as being REBUILT, your a fool. Most people dont even inspect things, they just open it up slap the diff in and think nothing else needs to be checked???

that seal is the seal that should be removed to measure the diff clearance, so hopefully it wasn't reused

i wonder if this guy bought the right size axle seal when he slapped it back in.

i also don't know why someone would replace the itr diff with a quife. just seems like a waste of money. there must be something to this story.

Check the tension ring on the seal to make sure it is tight and present.

Remove your axle, spread your axle circlip, then re-install your axle.

The differential seals nothing. The seal "seals" on the axle.

By the way, everyone was right, I fixed the problem that day and never replied. The axle seal WAS bad, hence the leak, it had nothing to do with it leaking out with the axle out, I was just freaking out. Thanks everyone!
