Default running rich i think please help

I just bought a 92 eg hatch about 2 weeks ago it has a 95 ls swap and 95 gsr tranny the car seem to me like its running rich but its not throwing any cels its running the stock ls ecu just don't know what it could be I can smell gas fumes really bad and its like its backfiring when I shift at high rpms and smokes only at high rpms. I did a search and couldn't find anything that would help. So any help would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance

you could prolly get away with a apex SVAFC and lean it out on a street tune and call it a day. you will have people to tell you to spend 500 on a tune but you dont need to do that. what size injectors are you running? was the car ever tuned before with a program/dyno?

I had a d15b7 running richer then any vehicle in planet eath! it was my first engine swap on a Honda so I mixed a few sensors up. turned out to be my MAP sensor and my TPS sensor were crossed. The car was loud is hell at idle and spit flames at idles and when driving after letting off my gas peddle a loud *** back fire would happen sounding like a 12 gauge shotgun.

I changed the spark plugs started it and off and 5 mins later checked them after them being shiny chrome to black is hell.

So check and swap those sensors around.

Were did you get the LS motor did you get it out of a teg yourself? Or did you buy it off someone? In anycase check to make sure you dont have DSM injectors in it and the resistor box. If the tps and map were crossed you'd know your CEL would be on.

Let us know

They are injectors from a turbo mitsubishi eclipse or eagle talon, The resistor box Im referencing looks like the pic below. They are used when you turbo a honda cheap and effective.

You'll normally find this box on the drivers side of the engine bay and theinectors are alot fatter so to speak than the stock honda injectors

Have you checked the ignition timing with a timing gun?

Is the thermostat possibly stuck open?

Have you looked for an exhaust leak in the header or near the O2 sensor?

I did tell him to check timing not as specific. But never thought about the other possible solutions you listed. What does a stuck open thermostat do? I would thing it would just take a long time to get to running temp?

Dosent take long for it to warm up just average time, so a timing gun used for like v8s will work with honda?

When the engine is cold, the ECU dictates an air-fuel ratio that is rich until the engine gets hot. If the thermostat is stuck open, then engine may not get hot or may take a long time to do so, especially if the weather is cold. Thus, a stuck open thermostat is one possible cause for making an engine run rich.

This is kind of surprising given that the engine is running so rich. Do they not consider hydrocarbon emissions in your state?

The diagram below shows how to check the ignition timing on a 5th generation Civic. The procedure for your engine is probably very similar.

That's what I thought but its not burning oil it smells like gas fumes and its backfiring. So it has to be fuel

If the ignition timing turns out to be fine, measure the fuel pressure and check whether the FPR is working. Is the FPR hose attached and pulling vacuum? You might also consider testing the resistance of the coolant temperature sensor (2P connector) under the distributor.

Do you have a o2 sensor? I know my b16 swap does the exact same thing, but i temporarily dont have a o2. There fore causing the ecu to run technically in safe mode, really rich.
