Default Good deal on a tranny, what should I do?

Hey guys, My tranny has been lacking good synchros for the past 3 years and since I had the money this year I wanted to rebuild it. But the problem is the down time. So I was thinking having seen this ITR tranny for sale cheap, perhaps I should get it. It is high mileage, owner says synchro 5-R is bad, but rest is ok says the guy. On my tranny, all my synchros are bad except the 4th gear, but I still have to change em all as it comes with the 3rd gear synchro, which is shot.

So should I buy the tranny 500$ and rebuild it slowly through out the summer while using mine, then switch them out and rebuild mine and resale it? This implies 1 tranny install 2 rebuilds.

Install his 500$ tranny without rebuild since it's most likely in better shape than mine even though the 5th gear is bad(so is mine) and rebuild mine so I could keep the original tranny in the car and resale his after the job, rebuilt or not, and get the same money I paid for it. This implies 2 tranny installs this summer and 1 or 2 rebuilts depending and the sale of one tranny.

Should I avoid buying his and just rebuild mine and risk some down time?

Wait it out an extra summer and rebuild mine at the end and ride another summer with shitty synchros double clutching and rev matching as I am actually doing?

I need advice guys, I could get this tranny rebuilt up and running for a total of roughly 1000-1100$ including the seals synchros bearings given about 600$ for the rebuild parts (is that enough?). How much does a rebuild typically cost in parts? I searched alot of threads, but I didnt come accross one where honda parts are clearly listed and compiled for a one call order to Len
Thanks for the input guys!

I wouldn't get rid of your original tranny, as the VIN will no longer match your car, which will hurt the resale value. I would either tolerate some down time, or buy and rebuild the other tranny and still keep your original, though I know that's not the cheapest option.

i wouldnt buy that other messed up tranny. just bite the bullet and accept some down time to get it fixed.

if u cant afford the down time then look for a gsr or b16 tranny. u can usually find a good one for 400-600 dollars.

why not just buy all the parts for your rebuild now, while your still driving your car. and once you have everything, then pull yours and rebuild it, really if you plan it right you should have much down time at all.

a) sit with the downtime while current one is rebuilt
b) source a b16,gsr, ls to use for mean times while stock one being rebuilt and then sell it once finished

there's a guy on ebay who pops up with new in the box from honda ITR trannies for $1300, i just bought one myself. for the price they are a great deal and you can sell your broken tranny for around $500. just the LSD is worth 300. i would spend the extra 800 on a new one. and yes. the dealer can switch your vin plate to the new transmission. most body shops probably could as well. this also could help the resale since you would have paperwork of a new oem part.

The parts im sure are probably fine. Syncrotech was gearspeed. The only thing is that most of the time its not just the syncro's that are bad but also the syncro sleeve gets chewed up. You can try and file it down so its smooth and doesn't bind on the hub and try and make the grooves pointed again with a file or just replace them all together, thats why the oem kit includes a new hub and ring along with the syncro's.

Yeah well, they sell synchro sleeves as well on the site, might be able to get a complete rebuild package or something. I'm sure I have every set of sleeves chewed, all my gears are in bad shape but they all go in though.

Thanks for your input guys... So far plan is to source a LS tranny (which I had laying around) and pull the R tranny, check it and order the needed parts and fix it as soon as I can after that... that way I'll have no downtime and still get the take my caR out

Thanks for the help everyone!
