ABS is a somewhat impact resistant plastic. For best impact-resistance and paintability look for polyurethane pieces. I've never done a kit install nor do I do body work, but I know that abs is a durable plastic used alot in construction.

 

Also, your parent's patio chairs are probably made of ABS plastic, I don't know how hard it would be to paint.
