Default CEL 17 SHORT blinks is this right?

I have a CEL. I had disconnected the battery and when i put it back in the light does not come back on for about 3 miles. I counted the blinks and it had 17 SHORT blinks. code 17 is VSS. but i though 17 would be one long blink and seven short blinks? I haven't watched my speedometer real close, but when i look down it is working. Whats going on here?

code 17 is one long and 7 short blinking lights, what you have is not a code 17.

It could be two codes (example 9 & 8). Perhaps you missed the initial pause and counted 17.

if you have an OBD0 D-series ECU, there are no long and short flashes, only short - OBD0 B-series and OBD1 ECUs are the only ones with long and short flashes

yes, you have code 17 which is the VSS

sorry I was wrong. If when you look down and see that you speedometer is working, try looking to see if the needle is shaking. When mine went bad the needle was shaking or slow to respond until about 40mph, after that it appeared fine. But, then it stoppped working all of a sudden.

Great help right here.

Yes, as jlicrx said, you can have a Code 17 and it is for the VSS. I used to get phantom Code 17s after swapping in a ZC trans and my speedo would wobble between 20-35 mph.
