Default Help! Stuck in 4th gear!

Well long story short. I bought this car. I know the previous owner. He claimed what happened was he was hauling ***, and as he was slowing down to a red light he put the shifter into first (he said he had to bang it in pretty hard) gear, but didnt let out the clutch. He said there was a loud pop or bang, and now the shifter is STUCK in 4th gear. The only thing that works is the clutch and slipping the clutch to about 10mph.

He claims the flywheel came off and smashed **** up, and it needs a new tranny. Of course, he's been known to be VERY wrong before.

Any other info as to possibilities before I buy a new tranny?

If it is the tranny, where can I get one cheap?

Thanks

Matt

My guess is that he probably destroyed a selecter fork (or/and more), and that transmission will need a rebuild regardless. You'd be better off finding a used transmission with lower mileage from a junkyard (See FAQ's for junkyard search engine).

The shifter moves all around, but I guess the car is permanently stuck in 4th gear. Where can I buy a cheap transmission?

Sigh...

See the portion that says Honda OEM. Look below it... and voila! The link under the word "Used".

Thanks matt! I found one for a great price!

JDM freak- I might consider that. We'll see what the shop has to say about everything

Another quick question.. which year transmission will retain the stock tranny in my 05 EX special-edition? Does it ONLY have to be an 05? Because I'm seeing some 01's for my car, but dont know if they are different from my EX s-e tranny

Gearing will be different in the EX's. You can certainly use a previous year transmission, but I do not know what your local laws are for parts being used on your car. I know some places require current year or newer parts (California is one of those states).

Whaaaa? You HAVE to buy new parts in CA?? Thats ridiculous. But what year EX will have the same gearing as my EX has (2005) ?

That's not what I typed. I stated that you have to have a transmission of the same year as the production year of your bike. You don't have to go out and buy a new one from Honda, you just need to make sure it's from the same year.

And they actually check that kind of stuff? What happens if they find out it's not a similar year part?

I have no idea, I'm not from California. That's something you need that to refer to your local law enforcement for guidance.

Oh. Well NC is pretty damn lenient and easy as far as inspection (as long as your cel isn't on), but thats good info to know!

Also thanks for the link.. I found a pretty badass priced trans.

So the dealer thinks it might either be the clutch or the linkages. Which makes sense, since I've had a GST w/ popped off linkages that did the same thing.

Where are the linkages, and how do I remove the center console cover so I can look down there?

Read the "How-to" section here to remove your center console. The shift cables run through the floor pan into the cockpit to the shift box inside the car. I doubt they're the cause of the problem, though.

Wow this car has the goofiest shift linkage on top of the transmission I've ever seen lol. Some little black piece of plastic/metal/whathaveyou that goes up and down and side to side. It's moving, but I dont know correctly.

I took it to our post hobby shop, and the post mechanic thinks that the 1-2-3 synchromesh is gone, since the car is stuck in 4th gear, but if I jimmy it I can get it into 5th gear.

I'll check the how-to section, thank you.

That's only for emission's equipment and even that is sketchy at best.. They just don't want people in a 2000 EX using a '96 Intake Manifold because the '96 doesn't have the same warmup procedure as the '99-'00, and therefore emits more emissions. So while the engine itself should be excluded from this if everything matches, it doesn't because they potentially can lookup the block ID and see it's too old for that year of the car. They would NEVER do this for a transmission however so the OP is perfectly fine.
