Icon6 z6/y7 block mini-me swap will not rev over 3,500 rpm

97 civic hatch dx
d16y7 head - d16z6 head
d16y7 block
d16y7 intake manifold - d16z6 intake manifold
d16y7 fuel rail and injectors - d16z6 fuel rail and injectors
converted y7 injectors obd2a - d16z6 fuel injector clip obd1
converted y7 distributor obd2a - d15b distributor obd1
p28 ecu vtec 5speed
obd2a-obd1 ecu jumper harness

Motor starts up fine and is responsive but will not rev over 3,500 rpm.
It does that in park and in all 5 gears.
The only cel codes is 21 which is the vtec solenoid...
Even though the vtec is not working, I believe the motor should still rev past 3,500 rpm.

I've been researching a lot about this problem, but I could not come to a conclusion.

-I read that it could be the ckp sensor since the z6 head and the p28 does not have a ckp sensor and the y7 block does. That sensor is still connected so maybe that could weird out the ecu. I had the p2p ecu connected and it revs to 6,000 rpm. The p2p ecu reads ckp sensor and the p28 doesn't. The only thing is it does not run well with the p2p ecu. That is the reason for switching over to p28.

-I solder the distributor connectors according to this https://honda-tech.com/forums/showthread.php?p=37407040 however the light blue is switched with the dark blue since I followed the exact instructions and the idle gauge did not move. I later found out that I could have just swapped the internals of the dizzy so that the bolts would align to the base.

-I read that obd2 and obd1 dizzy are the same internally? Is there some sensors inside one and not the other? Like the ckp sensor?

-I also have one sensor that isn't connect on the z6 intake manifold which i believe is the (Absolute Temperature sensor).

I was told that the p28 ecu was bad because it didn't rev past 3,500 rpm and the p2p ecu did. I sold the p28 for a bill and I later checked a friends p28 and it did the same thing so i have to look for another one DAmn! SHOULD HAVE CHECK THE P28 BEFORE SELLING IT! HAHA

It is not the tps and the map sensor because I had already switched it up.

I asked many of my mechanic friends but this problem has yet to be solved....

Your help and intel is much appreciated if possible! Thanks let me know guys!

i used the p2p and it revs over and fine but when i used the p28 it doesnt rev over 3,500 rpm. I tried 2 different p28 ecu one i sold because i thought it was the ecu and i check my friends after and it did the same thing so i know its not the ecu. The timing is off by one teeth

yea that is what i thought at first, so i sold the p28...later that day i checked my friends p28 and it did the same thing...the d16z6 motor runs off the p28 but i cant figure why its doing that....

the only sensor i didnt use off the d16z6 head was the temperature absolute sensor and the purge solenoid sensor. Instead i used the d16y7 sensors instead: Intake air temperature sensor, and the evac solenoid sensor which are basically the same thing but for different motor. I would have used the z6 sensors but i did not have the clip for the purge solenoid. for the IAT sensor from the y7 it is connected to the air intake and for the z6 the temperature absolute is connected to the intake manifold.

I don't know if that's going to make a difference? but i could take out the IAT sensor and use the Temperature absolute sensor instead. Also use the purge solenoid but i do not have the clip.

I know the p28 does not read the ckp sensor because the d16z6 does not have a ckp sensor. As for the p2e and the p2p ecu, those read the ckp sensor since the y7 and y8 motors have the ckp sensor. Since I am running a p28 should i take out the ckp sensor since it might cause some malfunction to the timing? Can someone explain to me more in to detail about this? I am just trying to figure out why it's not reving over 3,500 rpm.

if you guys plan on doing mini-me swap go with a y8 head, it will save you from this trouble...

I would try and get a hold of those two sensors rite there and their is a possibility that that's your problem

what would you say about the ckp sensor? the one underneath the lower timing belt cover?

limp mode?try resetting the ecu by removing the negative battery terminal and removing the hazard fuse under hood and also the 7.5 back up fuse too

It worked!!!!!!!!!! I have a d15z1 block with z6 head. I couldn’t figure out what heck was happening. I just pulled those fuses and it’s revving like it’s supposed to. Big ups for your post, Yo!

Trip out though. I did a google search because my mini me swap was driving me crazy with the same issue, and I found this post. I don’t know about folks trying to bump post counts, but I’d still be stuck if jdmTypeR1996 didn’t post that.
