Crank Pulley wobble
It never stops.... I just noticed today that my crank pulley is wobbling at idle. I know this isn't supposed to happen. Could this contribute to lower performance and rough idle? Also, are there any suggestions on a good one to purchase? Lastly, where can I pick up the crank pulley brace tool? I've borrowed one in the past from the local Honda dealer but they won't let me anymore. I don't want to mess around with my strap again and pep boys doesn't have it. Any help would be great! Thanks
I've really gotta update my profile and signature, it's a 99 Accord LX 2.3L F23A. Man that year is starting to look ooolllddd. 10 years, dang. Thanks
is it a stock pulley? ID check the torque ont he bolt.
i dont think f23's have the inspection hole in the block otherwise id suggest holding the flywheel ring gear with a pry bar. thats how i got my crank pulley bolt off.

You can buy the tool off Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Powerbuilt-648...9816207&sr=8-1
I've been trying to find this at retail stores and couldn't find it. This is your best bet. Cheapest also!

Awesome! Thanks, I just purchased it at Amazon. Only 25 for the tool with free shipping after signing up for some amazon thing. I'll cancel before they charge 79. When it gets here I'll pull the old one. Is there anything I should do to check it or is it safe to say it's done? Also, what could you suggest for a new pulley?

I've just picked up a new torque wrench today that goes to 250 LB. I used this wonderful pulley tool and cranked that bugger down. I'm pretty sure this fixed the wobble. We'll see.
Ok, I need a new balancer. The one I have looked like it settled down, but, the power steering section of the balancer is perfectly true where the AC / Alternator section of the pulley is wobbling like nuts.
So, where can I get a good one?

Any suggestions on a good new crank pulley for less? Napa can do one for tomorrow sometime for about $60. This should be OEM quality I guess... Any suggestions here would be great.
Used crank pulleys are cheap and extremely plentiful. Pick one up from a salvage yard for $35 or less. Any '98-02 Accord 4-cylinder pulley will work.
I picked up a new pulley from Napa. Thanks for the suggestion about the used one. I want to make the the rubber is perfect though. I'll be installing this thing tonight along with changing the oil to Castrol Syntec 5w 20 in hopes of helping with my knocking sound. I hope someone can watch the vid in my posting and let me know what that sound is from????
Guess what! I went to install the napa pulley, slid it onto the crank, and, the honda pulley tool DIDN'T FIT IN THE SOCKET!!!!!!

I can't take much more of this. Between this and the knock... Ugh, I'm about to can this car and get something else! It's just so nice not having a car payment. I'm sick of this. Off to napa tomorrow to demand my money back. I tried for hours to grind my tool down with my fien multimaster but no dice. The heck

What a mess this has been, I got another pulley ordered from Levine, shipped over night for an additional charge and wouldn't you know it, it looked the exact same as the one I got from Napa, just with a different label. I asked levine if they had the Honda pulley tool and they did. They tried it and sure enough it didn't fit! The company that builds these things is sending them out with manufacturing defects! Wow, so, thankfully there was a Honda dealer not to far from me that had it in stock. Picked it up today, and, THE HONDA TOOL DIDN'T FIT!!! No, J/K, it fits perfectly. I'm going to put the bastage on right now!
the new pulley is on. I took my time and checked the timing belt that was changed last year and spent a little time to readjust it since I was in there already. The new pulley made a HUGE difference in the idle and shake while accelerating. Now it's perfectly straight and 0 wobble. We'll see how it goes but it felt great today. I just hope it stays that way! If it doesn't, I'M going to throw a rod and die!
Just a couple of questions and observations about a similar problem I had with my 93 Civic. All this was caused because I did not have the correct pulley holding tool that would allow me the get the 134lbs. of specified torque.
How long (how many miles)was the pulling wobbling? Before installing the new pulley did you inspect the key and the key way slot in the crank, to make sure that the key and the key way did not already get distorted by the loose pulley banging the key around in the key way slot.? Based upon your earlier post it sounds like you were going to make sure it was torqued nice and tight. I had the end of my crank in my 93 civic snap off due to lack of torque on the pulley. Please post how your fix worked out. Thanks!
