buying used shock
i am planning to buy a set of used shock but i was wondering how do i check to see if it is blown or good condition? i dont want to buy them and put them on and end up mess up. Its tokico illumina and plan to use it with my eibach prokit
Check the seal where the shaft retracts into the body and make sure its not leaking. Take the spring off the shock and compress the shock by hand. It should be difficult to compress throughout the entire stroke. It should rebound uniformly. Set it to its stiffest setting and do the same. Check the shafts and look for scoring. Any scoring can ruin the seal and ruin the shock. Check out all the threads. Make sure you get all the adjusters.
Really, the only true way to tell if the shock is operating correctly is to dyno it.
The steps that stevieteg listed can identify a definitely blown shock, but they do not tell you for certain that the shock is still good.
