Default 1997 accord no gears (auto)

Alright, i'm not familiar with the accord by any means so please fill me in with any info. I've been tryin different search criteria but cant find it (might be goin over it, if so i apologize) and have also looked through the FAQ's but didnt find it there either.

This is my brothers car (hes an idiot) and i got a call asking what was wrong with it. From what i was told; he ran to get somethin to eat, turned the car off, got food, came out, started the car, went to put it in reverse and somehow it went all the way to 1st. Now from what i'm told the shifter freely moves and he cant get it in park or get the key out, nothing.

Is this a common problem? Maybe a linkage between the gearshift?

I'm at a loss and kinda feel retarded i cant think of what it is...any help is greatly appreciated!

thanks in advance

was the car moving when he went from reverse into 1st? ... you should definitely check the cable that runs from the A/T shifter to the trans ... it sounds like its staying in neutral ...

Wish i could go over and tell you man...i live in Ames, Iowa and my parents/brother are in davenport (3 hours away).

Just what my dad told me was he got in and put it in reverse like normal (doubtful cause hes an idiot) and it just moved free. They're asleep now so i cant ask if its stuck in neutral or what, but i'll definitely know more tomorrow.

I'll see if i can talk someone into checkin into the cable that attaches it...

Thanks for the help thus far guys
