I have a manual 2002 honda civic 5 speed.. I don't know anything about cars, so maybe you guys can help me out. The other day I was trying to shift from 3rd gear to 4th and it wouldn't go into any gear. After a few minutes I did get it into gear but the car would only move in first (but would only go so slow that i couldnt even make it up a hill without rolling backwards). If I try to go into another gear the rev will rise up but the car wont move at allll. People are telling me transmission, maybe the clutch. I have no idea? What do you think?

I had an old Celica that had similar problems. I could get it into all the gears, but driving it was nearly impossible due to how bad the clutch was.

Going uphill was nearly impossible (first gear, really slow) If you gave it too much gas, the RPM's would rise quickly, but the car wouldn't go any faster. (at all)

 

Sounds like the pressure plate, i.e. time for a clutch job.

And yes it wasnt me thats exactlyy what it does.. sometimes it wont even move at all. Did you ever get yours working?

 

I replaced the clutch and it was fine.


How many miles are on your Civic? I ask, because it may need additional preventive maintenance work.

If you haven't done any real maintenance to the car, now's definitely the time.

Must Change's (*if they haven't been done yet) - Timing belt, belt tensioner, water pump, coolant, seals/gaskets, manual transmission fluid, etc.

Should Change's (*) - Spark plugs, air filter, brake fluid, oil, oil filter, belts, etc.
